Update on Cloud Campus for 2021-22

In last night’s Board Work session, the District shared findings from the recent Cloud Campus feasibility study, as well as other factors impacting the continuation of the Cloud Campus model for the 2021-22 school year. Information presented included parent survey results, expected budgetary impacts, new rules from the Oregon Department of Education for distance learning models, and staffing implications. All of these factors were shared with the Board in consideration of whether or not providing a fully online learning model was feasible for the District in the coming school year. To see this presentation and for more information, please click here for the recording of last night’s work session (presentation starts at the 17:05 mark on the video).

After extensive consideration, the District has decided not to offer a Cloud Campus model next year. Decisions like these are not taken lightly, as we know they have impacts on our students and families. After consideration of multiple factors, it is apparent that we simply cannot offer a financially sustainable online program that meets the needs of students and families, given the limited number of families wanting that option next year. Therefore, the Sherwood Cloud Campus will cease operating at the end of the current school year. As noted in previous communications, the District will be opening to full-time, in-person instruction in the fall at all grade levels.

As a next step, our district will be working to identify fully-online alternatives for families best served by that instructional model to assist those families in connecting with the right match for their student. We want to thank our dedicated staff who served our students on the Cloud Campus throughout this school year.

Change to 2021-22 District Calendar - Early Release Days

The Board of Directors has approved a change to the 2021-22 District Calendar relating to early release days. For the past several years, our schools have released students two hours early every other Wednesday to allow teachers time to collaborate, aligning learning targets across grades or content areas and identifying students in need of additional supports or interventions. Beginning next year, we will be moving to a one-hour early release every Wednesday, on a weekly basis. This will allow more timely and targeted responses to student needs, as well as providing more frequent opportunities for teachers to make adjustments to instructional practices to improve student learning outcomes. We believe this will be a better way to meet the needs of all students in our district. Additional information on this change, as well as the ongoing implementation of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) model, was shared at our May 26 Board Meeting, which can be viewed here. The revised 2021-22 District Calendar can be viewed here, or by clicking on the image below.

Update on Equity Audit and Equity Visioning Committee

At last night’s meeting, an update was provided to the Board on the work of the Equity Visioning Committee, as well as the findings of the first phase of the District’s ongoing equity audit. The presentation included testimonials from students and staff interviewed during the course of the audit (a PDF of that presentation can be found here, and the recording of the presentation can be viewed here, beginning at 1:41:53).
