English Language Arts and Reading Newsletter

I hope all of you are enjoying these last few weeks of the fall semester! I've spent some time curating instructional resources for this newsletter that I hope you will find useful. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about these strategies or would like some ideas for how you can begin incorporating them into your own classrooms. Happy holidays!

Don't forget to sign up in Eduphoria for our STAAR Writing Calibration day!

STAAR Writing Calibration in December

In reviewing our STAAR writing data from 2014, I’ve identified a need to make sure that all of our writing teachers in the STAAR-tested grades are on the same page in regards to best practices for teaching/assessing writing. As a result, I am going to host a scoring calibration session for all of our 4th, 7th, 9th, and 10th grade teachers in December. During these sessions, we will 1) review each element of the TEA scoring rubric(s), 2) analyze exemplar writing sets, and 3) identify common patterns among the highest scoring essays. We will conclude each session with a candid discussion on how teachers can use this information to improve their own instructional practices. I expect that our time together will be extremely valuable for everyone involved and will ensure that teachers are completely prepared to support our students as we move into the next testing season.

Please work with your administrators and campus secretaries to secure substitute teachers for those who will be attending through AESOP. Code to CURRICULUM AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT.
