Our Mission, Vision, Beliefs

At Battle Creek Middle School, all members of the learning community (students, parents, families, colleagues, and partners) are valued and respected. All members learn through culturally responsive teaching and learning. All members meet and embrace high academic and social expectations and beliefs that learning is collaborative and life-long. All members interrupt instances of inequalities and injustice.

Note from the Principal

Greetings Battle Creek Middle School (BCMS) Families,

We hope you all had a restful spring break. It is hard to believe our students already completed the first two weeks of Term 4 with only 7 more weeks to go before the school year ends. A reminder that to view your student’s Term 3 final grades, please log into your SPPS Parent Portal account. Report cards will not be mailed home. If you would like to request a hard copy of your student’s report card, please call our main office at 651-293-8960.

As a reminder, effective 4/18/2022, masks are optional in all St. Paul Public Schools buildings during low to medium Ramsey County COVID community levels. For more information, see SPPS Board resolution. Individuals may still choose to wear a mask.

The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) in math, reading and science is also scheduled for April. The math and reading MCA test is given to grades 6 through 8. The science MCA test is given to grade 8. For more questions about the MCA, please contact Dee Xiong, testing coordinator at dee4.xiong@spps.org or the main office.

We have also entered the 22-23 course registration process. This week, counselors Nimol Ou and Kim Rinehart will be going into science classes to register current 6th and 7th graders. Incoming 6th graders will be invited to attend our registration night on May 5th from 4:30 – 6 PM. For more information, please contact our counselors at nimol.ou@spps.org and kim.rinehart@spps.org.

Throughout this year, there have been ongoing discussions and reflections with BCMS educator leaders and administration on our students' return and transition from virtual to in-person learning, and the impact of the pandemic this school year. One area that came up was the impact of our current school bell schedule with 7 classes with alternating A and B day classes. In our current A and B day schedule, this means a couple of classes switch every other day. Essentially, some of our students do have up to 10 different classes within the same term all year. Administration collaborated with our Parent Advisory Council and school and student leaders to explore possible scheduling options. The recommendation was to move to a straight 7-period day with no A and B day schedule, daily Foundations class and no split lunches. Administration submitted a new proposal bell schedule to BCMS Assistant Superintendent Billy Chan and district leaders and we are excited to share that our proposed bell schedule has been approved. This means starting the 22-23 school year, BCMS will have a new bell schedule. To view a copy of our new 22-23 bell schedule, click on this link. If you have questions about our new schedule, please contact our school.

And as always, the partnership between Battle Creek Middle School, our families and community is essential in our students’ success, and we appreciate your ongoing support. Please don’t hesitate to contact our school for any questions and concerns.

In partnership,

Oulia Yang, Principal

Next Community Day for BCMS students

Our next Community Day will be Friday, May 20. Just like the last one, we will be hosting many fun activities for our students the last hour of school day. This means our students will have a slightly alter schedule for that day to allow end of the day activity. Stay tune for pictures in the next newsletter.

Come see Alice in Wonderland

BCMS has a beautiful auditorium that has not been in used for over 20 years. We are finally putting it back to its original use. Mr. Paul has been instrumental in restoring and preparing for class use and to especially to host this very first performance in 22 years here at Battle Creek Middle. Please come and support our students. They've been working super hard to memorize their lines and getting into their roles. Your financial donation will go directly to support future theatre shows for our BCMS students.
