Principal's Message
Dear Parents/Guardians,
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. - Martin Luther King Jr.
This week’s quote is brought to us by our ELL & Dual Language Teacher, Mrs. Cervantes. What a light filled week this was at O’Neill Middle School! It was such a fun spirit week in preparation for our first assembly in 2 years! Congratulations to the 8th grade Senators on their first win of the year and they now retain the trophy until our next assembly in November.
How many times have we talked about how hard the past few years have been? This is the year we don’t move on, but we MOVE FORWARD. The assembly is the first step in bringing light back to O’Neill Middle School and reminding our students, staff, and community that we are one school working together to develop and promote growth in each other. We have always believed that school should be a safe place for our students but also that is fun.
The quote by Martin Luther King Jr. reminds us that we are working towards treating everyone with respect and love. We often tell children to ignore the behaviors of others, but during an interaction this week we were reminded that ignoring might not always be the answer. Understanding may be more important. Understanding where someone is coming from and continuing to treat them with love and respect often ends with the desired outcome on both sides.
As always, if you have any additional questions you are welcome to call the main office (630) 719-5815 between 8 AM and 4 PM Monday - Friday.
Have a great weekend!
Mr. Durbala & Mr. Cobo

District 58 School Board Governance Recognition
District 58’s Board of Education is one of only 33 Illinois school boards to earn this year’s School Board Governance Recognition from the Illinois Association of School Boards.
This recognition is given to school boards that model behaviors that lead to excellence in local school governance to support quality public education.
Congratulations, District 58 Board of Education! Our Board has accomplished a lot in the past couple of years, all while leading District 58 through a pandemic.

Health/Physical Examination & Immunization Record due October 15th
As required by law, all new students, as well as students entering grades K, 2 and 6, must receive health examinations and immunizations and submit completed health forms by October 15th. To learn more check out the Health Services page on the District 58 website.
Thank you to many of the families who have already completed and submitted these forms. If you have not already scheduled your appointment this is a good time to plan ahead! Failure to comply with these requirements by the end of the day on Oct 15, or 30 days following registration for first-time registrants, of the current school year will result in the student's exclusion from school until such requirements have been met according to Illinois law. All sections of the child examination form must be completed including the health history, which must be completed by the parent.
District 58 communicates frequently regarding these requirements as it is our hope to avoid school exclusion for all of our students. If you are in need of additional assistance, our school nurse, (insert name here phone number, and email), would be happy to assist you in accessing resources or assisting in removing other barriers to completing this requirement.

Middle School students at district 99 football games
I want to share that there have been some adjustments regarding middle school students attending District 99 sporting events.
Here is the information that you need to know:
- All District 99, middle school students, and elementary students may attend the game free of charge with a paid adult.
- All middle school and elementary students must be accompanied and supervised by a paid adult with a ticket/pass who is present the entire time the student is present at the game.
- If there is no adult present, the middle school/younger student will not be allowed in the game. If the younger student is in the stadium without an adult, they will be removed from the stadium and a parent will need to pick them up.
- Outside beverages are not allowed in the stadium
- Balls, Frisbees, or other like items are not permitted
- Skateboards, hoverboards, bicycles, or other like items are not permitted
- Bags and personal items may be subject to inspection
- There is no entry after half-time
Thank you for your continued support of our community and District 99 sports.
Curriculum Night is next Wednesday
O'Neill Middle School's Curriculum Night is Wednesday, September 21. Early Bird classes will meet at 5:45 PM. Starting at approximately 6:00 PM parents will follow a shortened bell schedule and will have the ability to visit all classes except lunch. Parents will meet with the building administration and support staff during your child's Reading period in the cafeteria.
NOTE: Please make sure that you have a copy of your child's class schedule when you arrive this evening.
Space considerations require us to limit participation and students do not attend.
We look forward to meeting everyone later this week.
