Guidelines for using social media in learning
Align to learning objectives
Set objectives that benefit from sharing or networking.
Introduce preclass activities
Introducing yourself, objectives and/ or content through the use of a social media site is a good way to introduce social media to the participants. YouTube is a good example. Participants can also introduces themselves using a community tool such as LinkedIn.
Set well-defined guidelines
Make sure privacy is protected
Disclosing personal information such as phone numbers, addresses, etc. on public social media sites is risky. Review the privacy and security settings and policies.
Comply with copyright laws
Photos, videos, new stories, etc. should be used only in compliance with copyright laws. Be sure to cite sources.
Promote student connection
Promote student and peer connections so that students can share their work and learn from each other
