Message from the Principal
The 4th Annual Fly-In, Cruise-In on March 7th is quickly approaching; start spreading the word. Jack Izbicki and the committee have been working tirelessly to make sure the event is a huge success, but they need your help. Send an email to Jack and let him know how you can help; whether it is securing donations or putting up signs the week before the event. Jeff Rexford is coordinating the volunteers for the day of the event so if you or your students are interested in volunteering on March 7th, email Jeff Rexford.
1. CONTINUE THE EXPANSION OF THE STATEWIDE POST-SECONDARY STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM - Request funding in the amount of $5 million for Year two of a three year statewide effort to implement a robust post-secondary student information system in each Technical College/Center throughout the State.
2. STATE FUNDING MODEL FOR POST-SECONDARY WORKFORCE EDUCATION PROGRAMS - Support continuing the work of the district workforce education funding steering committee to accurately align current costs and then position the Technical Colleges/Centers for future growth and development. A new component to the funding model will provide direct support dollars to our adult students with disabilities who have a 504 plan.
3. APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING - Support the expansion of the apprenticeship training model to assist employers throughout the State of Florida meet their needs for a high skilled and professional workforce.
4. DESIGNATION OF CAREER AND TECHNICAL TARGETED PROGRAM AREAS IN TARGETED FUNDING Support the development of a formal mechanism to identify targeted CTE areas, as well as the industry certifications that support these program areas, for inclusion on CAPE Post-secondary Certification Program Funding list. Florida Technical Colleges/Centers are proposing that each year in January a formal recommendation listing the identified programs be forwarded to the Chancellor of Adult and Career Education for Legislative consideration.
5. CLOCK TO CREDIT HOUR CONVERSION -Authorize Technical Colleges/Centers to offer technical education programs as credit hour instead of clock hour as appropriate and necessary. The Council on Occupational Education (COE) allows for either or both to be offered at the same institution. This will substantially improve transferability and articulation of credits for all our students as well as reducing administrative costs.
6. AWARDING OF COLLEGE CREDIT CERTIFICATES AND SELECT AAS DEGREES - Authorize the Technical Colleges/Centers to award college credit certificates and select AAS degrees in cooperation with the State Colleges from the technical education program inventory maintained by the DOE as approved by the governing board of the institution.
7. SUPPORT RAPID RESPONSE GRANT INITIATIVE Support of the Governor’s initiative to award funding to Technical Colleges/Centers who can rapidly implement/ expand technical education programs in high wage, high skill and high demand occupations.
8. FLEXIBILITY IN USE OF STUDENT FEES - Florida Statutes 1009.22(5), (6), and (7) authorize Florida Technical Colleges/Centers to collect fees for student financial aid, capital improvement, and technology expenses. The statute limits the amount per program at 10% for financial aid, 5% for capital improvement, and 5% for technology. We request flexibility to allocate the fees at each institution, in order to meet the needs of our students. This request will not authorize any additional fees; it will allow institutions local flexibility within the authorized amount to spend in the program(s) they determine are most critical.
Adam Janowiski in celebration of Black History Month shared a bulletin board created by one of our students. If you have an opportunity, stop by the media center and check it out. In the lower left hand corner is a link to an image that when you use an app called Aurasma, you can create an augmented reality link from a trigger image. When someone who has Aurasma on their device and scans the image, they will be taken to an “augmented reality”. In this case a video about the African American artists known as the Florida Highwaymen. If you want to learn more about augmented reality, make sure to review last week's Tech Tool Tuesday on the wiki or ask Marie Coleman for assistance.
Finally, congratulations to LWTHS for being recognized last week by Dr. Patton for having the best Fall 2014 High School Attendance rate. A trophy which will shift each semester to the school with the best attendance was presented as well as a plaque which will hang in the high school. All of you play a role in motivating our students to be in school every day but special recognition is deserved by Sabrina Medal who on a daily basis personally calls the parents of students who are absent.
Tech Corner
Questioning has an important role in learning. Questions come from both the teacher and the learner and should be designed to focus on higher levels of thinking. Marzano’s strategy of engaging students with hypothesis generation and testing is a nice match for a variety of questioning techniques as described in this Edutopia article. Discovery Education’s Spotlight on Strategies - Twenty Questions - is another way to create that positive ‘questioning culture in the classroom.’ To add a technology layer to this would allow all students to participate in a back channel either in a class discussion or as a homework assignment. Although 81Dash requires an account to be created, it can be managed by the instructor and thus, no issues with anonymous (and often inappropriate) responses. I started an example here which requires students to create questions in response to watching Winning at Board Games with Probability.
Did you miss Tech Tool Tuesday last session and want to give Augmented Reality a try? This informational website explains what AR is, how it might be used in the classroom with links to specific examples, and how to create your own! If you do try it, let me know so I can see what you’ve done and provide you with an MIP. :)
This week, Tech Tool Tuesday will meet Tue, Feb 10th @2:35pm in 2-233. Come and learn about Thinglink and create an interactive image as a presentation or assessment tool. In thinking about images and technology, this ‘poster’ got my attention (Photo credit to lgb06 on Flickr).
