Mayfield High School Weekly Update

August 10, 2022

Welcome Back!

I hope that all of you had a fun and relaxing summer. The beginning of each school year brings excitement, a renewed focus, and a clean slate. I challenge all of our students, staff, and families to make this the best year possible. Four years go by fast! We are reminded of this each spring as we celebrate each graduating class. Take advantage of every course offered, extracurricular opportunities, dances, athletic contests, musicals, volunteer options, and more. These opportunities will help you grow holistically and help steer you on your path beyond your high school years.

Mayfield is a special place. We have a supportive community and Board of Education. I could not be more proud as a Mayfield Alum and staff member.

I look forward to opening our doors to the Class of 2026 on Thursday, August 25th and to the Classes of 2023, 2024, and 2025 on Friday, August 26th. Let's make this a special year!

As our students walk into the building this school year, they will notice a few significant changes.

  • Completion of the 9-10 Option space
  • Addition of a new open learning space and athletic suite (old upstairs boys' locker room)
  • New locker rooms (old girls' locker room - wood gym)
  • New addition to Wildcat Sport and Fitness
  • Elevator added to Wildcat Sport and Fitness
  • New Fabrication Lab (Science Wing)
  • Interactive Media and Information Technology moved to the Innovation Center

In addition to these changes, the construction of a new main entrance to Mayfield High School will begin in late fall and will be completed by the summer of 2023.

Welcome to the Mayfield Family

Michael Coury - Associate Principal for Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development

Mr. Coury joins Mayfield High School from Garfield Heights where he served as the Coordinator of Data and Accountability and previously served as the Curriculum Consultant at the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio. Before this, he served as a curriculum consultant at the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio and the Principal of both Copley High School and Waterloo High School & Middle School.

Mr. Coury and his wife, Brittany have four young children ages 1 to 11, Adalee, Elias, Arwen, and Josephine, along with a dog named Ducky. In his free time, Mr. Coury enjoys spending time with his family at the park, the Great Lakes Science Center, or riding bikes around the neighborhood. He also loves to cook, play games, and fix stuff around the house.

Ms. Baker comes to Mayfield High School from Shaker Heights High School where she served as an assistant principal. Before her time at Shaker, she served as the Assistant Principal of Instruction at Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Florida.

Ms. Baker moved back to Ohio to be closer to family, especially her mother, who she added, “was my first teacher and is a retired educator.” She enjoys playing sand volleyball, occasionally practicing her golf swing at the driving range, and taking walks with her dog, Darwin

Daniel Sapanaro - Assistant Principal for Student Affairs (grades 9-10)

He and his wife, Jen, have three young children, Daniel, Teddy, and Isabella, along with a Goldendoodle puppy named Leo. For fun, Mr. Sapanaro enjoys spending time with friends and family, including his Dad, a Mayfield alumnus, coaching his children's sports teams, playing at the gym, and working on cars.
