REQUIREMENTS
- born in the United States
- 35 years of age
- resided in the Unites States for at least 14 years
DUTIES, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Chief Diplomat:
- directs foreign policy
- makes executive agreements (agreements with foreign leaders that are not approved by Congress)
- Chief Executive:
- in charge of the fifteen cabinet departments
- can make executive orders (a rule or command that has the force of law and does not have to be approved by Congress) ex. Japanese American Internment: President Roosevelt's Executive Order #9066
- Commander-in-Chief
- in charge of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard (all military factions)
- can order American soldiers into battle
- Legislative Leader
- signs bills into law (veto power)
- leads the legislative program in the annual State of the Union Address
- Head of State
- ceremonial role (represents America at special occasions and ceremonies)
- acts as a symbol of the United States of America
- Economic Leader
- goal: help the country's economy prosper
- deals with unemployment inflation and high taxes
- plans the federal government's budget every year
- Party Leader
- viewed as the leader of his/her political party
- selects party's national chairperson
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- the president makes $400,000 annually since 2001
- he/she also receives extra money for expenses and travel
- benefits: Camp David (country retreat), fleet of special cars, helicopters and airplanes
