7/8 Academy

Weekly News - November 5, 2021

Dear 7/8 Academy Families,

This coming week marks the end of our 1st trimester. It’s hard to believe that the first third of the year has gone this quickly. With the new trimester will come a significant change in our cell phone policy. We’ve struggled with students having and using phones in classrooms, which takes away their focus from instruction, and limits their engagement with the content and activities in the classroom. In order to support students in making better choices with their cell phones, we will implement a building-wide policy that requires students to turn in their cell phone for the school day if they are using it in a classroom, and a series of consequences associated with each violation. Please look for additional details in next week’s newsletter, and have conversations with your student about not using their cell phone in class. Students will also be notified of this change and engage in a series of activities in their homeroom class at the beginning of 2nd trimester to reinforce these expectations.

8th grade students recently had a presentation from the Battle Creek Math and Science Center. I have arranged with the BCAMSC to have testing sessions at Lakeview Middle School instead of students being required to go to the Math and Science Center. Students who sign up will take the test on Monday December 6th in the morning at Lakeview Middle School. If you would like your student to take part in one of these testing sessions, please fill out the Google Form below. This form will also be sent to students to self-select to take the test.

Please reach out to the 7/8 Academy office if you have any questions.

Thank you, and have a great weekend!

Board Moves Forward in Interim Search

Lakeview’s Board of Education took the next step in selecting an interim superintendent at a special board meeting last night.

Following four hours of interviews and deliberations, the Board approved a motion to enter into negotiations with retired Kalamazoo Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Cindy Green.

Board members cited Green's experience in school leadership, curriculum and instruction, school safety, health, and educational equity as reasons for her selection.

“Above all, the Board appreciated Cindy’s energy and passion for students, for education and for Lakeview. Her experience will serve the district well during this transition. We look forward to welcoming her back to the Spartan family,” said Board President Eric Greene.

Green, a proud member of the Lakeview High School Class of 1976, brings 17 years of experience as an Assistant Superintendent within Kalamazoo Public Schools.

The interim superintendent will serve through June 30, during which time the Board will conduct a comprehensive search for the district's next leader. Current Superintendent Blake Prewitt's last day with the district will be December 31.

Staff members will have opportunities to provide input throughout the search process.

A timeline for the search and public engagement is anticipated to be announced in late November.

Reminders for the Bus Stop

The policy of being at the stop a few minutes prior to the pick-up time allows to keep a bus schedule that is true to the posted pick-up times. We find that students waiting inside their homes or in cars are delayed in getting to the bus stop on time.

* Please be standing at your bus stop 5 minutes prior to the scheduled bus arrival time.

* If you miss the school bus -- NEVER chase or follow the bus!

* Note that the Driver cannot let your student on at an unauthorized bus stop!

If your child has missed the bus please take them to school. DO NOT take them to the next bus stop.

Chromebooks

Please remind your student to bring their fully charged chromebook and charging cord every day.

Student Work During an Extended Absence

All teachers will be communicating with families about how students can access their work during an extended absence such as a quarantine, illness, or suspension. Most teachers will be utilizing Schoology to house the classroom assignments.

We realize that 7th grade students do not have the same experience with Schoology as 8th grade students, so if they haven’t done so already, 7th grade teachers will be working with students to familiarize them with Schoology.

If you have an updated email address in Skyward, you would have received an email with your login information to your student’s Schoology account. Please watch the video below for step by step instructions.
