Moving Forward with Purpose and Passion

Warm Winter Greetings

Dear NYSO DKG members,

'Tis the season to spread joy and good cheer as we cherish time with family and friends. This is also an opportune time to set resolutions for the New Year! Perhaps one of your goals will be to apply for a NYSO Scholarship or Grant-in-Aid or to nominate a fellow member for one of our distinguished awards. You might also choose to honor an educator in your community with the invitation to become a member of our organization for Key Women Educators.

Please see below for the opportunity to join Gamma Alpha online at their January 8, 2022 meeting for a special presentation by NYSO honorary member Nyuon SS Williams.

I wish you all a blessed holiday season and a new year filled with good health and renewed spirit for DKG!

North Central Area Conference

The North Central Area Council, comprised of Beta, Nu, Chi, Sigma, Alpha Iota and Alpha Chi Chapters, hosted an Area Conference in Auburn on October 23, 2021. The theme focused on vibrant, determined women of the Auburn area and their impact on the Equal Rights movement. Kimberly Szewczyk, from the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, spoke about Harriet's life in Central New York. Participants toured the Seward House and gardens, then returned to the Auburn Public Theater for lunch and DKG presentations. Membership Chair Deborah Bedard spoke about re-engaging members in DKG and I led a discussion on the qualities of resilient women during the "Thought for the Day." Many thanks to NC Area Council Chair (and NYSO 1st VP), Barbara Bostwick-Quinn, for leading the Chapters in this Area Council event.

Gamma Alpha to host Chapter meeting - The Effect of Climate Change on Women and Girls: The Case of South Sudan

NYSO DKG members are cordially invited to join Gamma Alpha (SE Area) on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at 10 AM, for a special presentation by honorary member Nyuon SS Williams. Nyuon, founder of the National Alliance for Women Lawyers, and a member of the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP) will be sharing her advocacy efforts on behalf of women and girls in South Sudan. A few words from Nyuon about her work on this case:

"Every country is experiencing the effects of climate change differently on a large and dangerous scale. South Sudan is not an exception to this phenomenon, being one of the developing countries already struggling with so many challenges including war, food security, and the global pandemic. Climate change has already severely affected the country from all angles with limited resources to mitigate these effects, as well as recovery and resilience.

With these effects of climate change, women and children remain the primary victims of climate change- many are displaced and exposed to numerous dangers such as disease, violence, and hunger among others-"
