Practice ACT
- Taking the practice ACT test under actual test conditions will help our students gain an understanding of what this test will be like. The expectation is that students will be more relaxed to take the ACT on the actual test day.
- Our students will learn how to manage time constraints as this is a timed test.
- The practice ACT will allow students to find specific areas that need improvement before they take the real ACT.
- Practice tests are known to raise scores and we want our students to be successful with this test.
There will be a Senior Workshop scheduled at the same time as students in grades 9-11 take the practice ACT.
Student Progress Meetings
Senate Scholar Program
Congratulations to high school junior, Morgan Balczewski, for being selected to the Senate Scholar Program. The program is a week-long educational program offered by the Wisconsin State Senate. Admission to the program is highly competitive and is limited to 33 academically exceptional high school juniors and seniors from around Wisconsin. Each Senate Scholar receives a hands-on, up-close view of the Legislature’s role in our democracy.
Senate Scholars gain experience in such diverse areas as policy development, constituent relations, and processing legislation by working with Senators, legislative staff and University of Wisconsin faculty.
In order for Morgan to be considered she had to do the following:
- Fill out an application.
- Submit a 2-3 page informative essay on the 5 supportive agencies of the State of Wisconsin.
- 2 letters of recommendation.
- Submit a resume (including a cover letter).
- Provide a high school transcript.
- Receive sponsorship by State Senator Janet Bewley.

Ruffed Grouse Tracking
With the onset of winter (albeit a weird one so far), we pulled the grouse traps from the field as it is no longer safe or ethical to live-trap the King of Upland Birds. We now turn our focus to tracking the two birds we have collared and studying how weather and climate may impact their home ranges. Currently, we are working hard to hone our scientific procedures for data collection. For example, students discovered errors in their data which impedes the accuracy of their findings. One student redesigned the field data collection sheet to reduce simple errors such as missing GPS coordinates. Mr. Augustine and Mrs. Zwicke designed null-to-null practice sheets, where students do the challenging math involved with analyzing compass bearings. Additional practice with the accuracy of taking compass bearings is next. This is a multi-step, problem-solving project meeting standards in critical thinking, high-level applied math, and science. UPDATE 1/14/22: One bird’s tracking collar signaled mortality, and students tracked it to its final resting place. They turn their attention to collecting data to hypothesize its manner of death. Stay tuned...
How to Poison the Earth - Wait - What?
As part of our crossroads between science and social studies, students continue to learn how a single act affects the environment or community exponentially across time. During the first quarter, they learned how a community’s traditions or rituals could lead to poor or no thought to change a harmful practice. This quarter, students read an essay written by a teenager about how humans poison the earth, but the content comes in the form of satire. They also studied charts with details about pollution and watched a documentary on breaking the scientific boundaries that stabilize the earth. As a final, students wrote their own satires on silly problems they’d like to solve. By having fun with reading and writing, students learned the methods and processes that poison the earth but also how an author uses satire, sarcasm, and humor to get readers to see their serious, complex points. These are high-level critical thinking, English (reading and writing), and science standards.
