Cashell Elementary School - Community Newsletter
We are now several weeks in to the fourth quarter and May is right around the corner. With the end of the year rapidly approaching our students in grades 3-5 are working hard to show what they have learned on the PARCC assessments. There are also lots of upcoming events so please reach out to your child's teacher or the office if you have any questions about the events listed below.

Upcoming Changes in Schedule
Book Fair
The Buy One, Get One Free book fair begins next week (4/30-5/4). Please ask your child about their wish list. This is a great fundraiser for the PTA but it also a wonderful way to get your child excited about reading.
Kindergarten Announcement
Mark your calendars! We will be hosting Kindergarten Orientation for our incoming class on Thursday, May 3 and Friday, May 4. Classes will be canceled for our current Kindergarten students for these two days while we host our new kindergarten students in our building.
Do you have a child that will be age 5 by September 1, 2018 that will be joining our Kindergarten class next year? Please contact Mrs. Alexander in the main office for information about registration materials and to schedule an appointment to join us with your child for Kindergarten Orientation.
Do you have friends or neighbors that live in the Cashell neighborhood who have a child that will be old enough for kindergarten next year? Please let them know to contact Mrs. Alexander in the main office for registration materials and to schedule an appointment for Kindergarten Orientation.
Pay for Field Trips Online - Online School Payment
ONLINE SCHOOL PAYMENT (OSP) – now available at Cashell Elementary School.
Payments for field trips, merchandise, and events can now be made to Cashell using OSP directly on our website.
Please follow these steps to make a payment:
Go to the Cashell Elementary School website
In Quick Links on the left, select “Cashell Online School Payments”.
Select your child’s event or field trip for which you are making payment and follow the steps.
Please know, a 3.75% fee will be added to the purchase price as a site service for all school purchases made by credit card. This fee is not collected by MCPS, but by the processing company hosting the site. Please select an activity below.

School System News
STEM Night at Redland Middle School
STEM Night at Redland is next week May 3 at 7pm. Cashell families are welcome to join in for an exciting and fun night. There will be a special guest scientist, STEM challenges to design, build, test, and many prizes! There will also be a raffle at the end of the evening.
Special Education Parent Involvement Survey
Parents or guardians of children receiving special education and related services were mailed the Maryland Special Education Parent Involvement Survey from the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Special Education/Early Intervention Services during the week of February 5, 2018. Parents are asked to complete the survey and return it in the postage paid envelope by May 1,2018. The Survey may also be completed online. Please look for details in your survey packet. Your feedback will help guide efforts to improve special education and related services in your local school system. Gaithersburg Book Festival
Montgomery County Public Schools is proud to be a partner in the 2018 Gaithersburg Book Festival on Saturday, May 19, on the grounds of Gaithersburg City Hall, 31 South Summit Avenue in Gaithersburg. The book festival has a great lineup of authors and activities for children of all ages. Several members of the MCPS community will be conducting readings at the festival and there will be many programs, workshops, and activities in the Children’s Village that are designed to promote interest in reading and writing. Classroom Corner
We've been reading a Very Hungry Caterpillar in our classes. We've been making caterpillar and butterfly crafts to go with our book!
SCB
Students in SCB are learning about life cycles of insects and animals.
Pre-Kindergarten
Students in Pre-K are learning how to take care of themselves. Specifically, they are learning how to be healthy and not spread germs.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students are reading re-telling different versions of traditional folk tales including Goldilocks and the Three Little Bears and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. To celebrate all of their hard work they had a teddy bear day at school.
First Grade
The first graders are learning about how humans impact the environment. To culminate some of their learning they are writing special Earth Day poems.
Second Grade
Our second graders worked hard on poetry this quarter. We learned about lines, stanzas, onomatopoeia, and much more!
Third Grade
The third graders are completing STEM explorations. One exploration involved building a catapult to learn more about engineering and velocity.
Fourth Grade
In science our fourth graders are investigating and describing how magnets interact with other objects.
Fifth Grade
Fifth graders are completing research about a specific animal in order to write an informational poem.
