Social-Emotional Learning and Bullying Prevention Program
To further help our school be a safe and respectful place, we are also going to use the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit. This unit is available through Purdue University and MESA. In this unit, your child will learn specific skills to help stop bullying. Students will learn how to:
- Recognize when bullying is happening,
- Report bullying to a caring adult, and
- Refuse to let bullying happen
- Be a bystander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying
- Support someone who is being bullies by standing up for that person and being kind and inclusive
- Recognize, report, and refuse cyber bullying when they see or know about it happening
For bullying prevention to work, everyone at school needs to be involved. All of our staff have received special training in how to:
- Recognize and respond to bullying
- Support children who have been bullied
- Correct behaviors of children who are bullying
- Use strategies that support a positive school and classroom climate
And we need your help, too! Get involved in making our school a safe and respectful place by letting us know if you hear about bullying at our school. Make sure your child knows to tell you or someone at school if he or she is being bullied. Give your child the clear message that it is never ok to bully others.
You can access the Second Step materials by joining SecondStep.org with the Activation Key that will be sent home before the program begins on September 22, 2023.
If you have any questions about the Bullying Prevention Unit or Second Step SEL, please contact Mrs. Etienne. For more information on our district's anti-bullying policy and specific procedures, check our website or contact the school office for a copy of the Student-Parent Handbook. Thank you for helping us make our school a safe, respectful place where everyone can learn.

Apply for help with tutoring costs
While Indiana is making great strides in boosting student reading and math scores, more work needs to be done to get scores back to pre-pandemic levels. To support students in reaching their goals, Indiana Learns is providing grants to help families pay for after-school tutoring.
With Indiana Learns, established through legislation I supported, eligible families can receive up to $1,000 to use toward approved math and reading tutors, and academic camps during school breaks for students in grades three to eight.
To be eligible, a student must qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program and have scored below proficiency in either mathematics or English/language arts on ILEARN in 2022.
To find out if your student qualifies, click here.
This is a great opportunity to help students improve their reading and math skills, and I hope more families consider applying for an Indiana Learns grant. Eligible students must use the funding before June 30, 2024. To learn more and apply, click here.

Wolfpack Den Program
Building lasting relationships!
South Crawford Elementary is excited to announce a new school-wide initiative that will help us build supports, create a sense of belonging, and increase school pride. SCES will be following the school within a school model of creating school “families” with cross age peer groups. Our school will have eight “dens” where about 20 kids will be paired with a few adults from throughout the building. The dens will meet regularly and have a short activity to build connections and learn about our school-wide character curriculum. You can see evidence of den activities in our hallways. Please ask your child about his/her den and den activities throughout the year!
