This Week in Room 120

Week of April 15, 2013

Reader's Workshop

We are learning how to be a productive member of a Book Club this week! The students will be placed into a group that is all reading a common book assigned to them. The students will be working hard to complete their reading assignments before their discussion dates. All of the learning that has happened so far this year will be used in these Book Club discussions. The teachers will be assisting the discussions at first and will gradually back out so that the students are responsible for the entire discussion themselves. We are excited to begin this Book Club learning!

And all the sweet serenity of books”

Writer's Workshop

This week will be the last week of our Dear Diary...endangered animal books. The students are working on their final drafts which will include text and illustrations. The completed books are due after class on Friday. Please check with your child to see where he/she is in the writing process.

There are two kinds of writer: those that make you think, and those that make you wonder.

Word Study

Word Study will be replaced this week with Poetry Workshop. The students will be reading and writing poetry during our class time. We will review what good authors do and then let the students' inner poets get to work!

This week the 8:00 math group will be learning how to find numbers that will fit into an inequality, such as p > 6 where p could equal any number that is 6 or greater. The students will also be using algebra to complete function tables. They will then use the data from the function tables to graph points on a coordinate graph.

This week the 9:00 math group will finish up their work with division. They will be reviewing the various ways to divide whole numbers and decimals. By midweek, they will begin learning about exponents and square roots.

Next Monday will be the Gebhardt Celebration of Learning. It will start at 3:30 and end at 6:30. This is a chance to come in and see some of the work that your child has been doing this year.

Please be sure to send back the photo packets that were sent home last week. You can keep and purchase the photos that you would like. The payment and remaining photos should be returned to school. Thanks!

We are in need of more Clorox wipes. If you are able to donate a container, our messy desks would really appreciate it!

Students should be reading each night for a minimum of 20 minutes!
