Mr. Rubin Goes to Washington
Last summer, I had the distinction of being named the state coordinator for the National Association of Secondary Schools Principals. Part of my responsibilities in that role, in addition to serving on the Board of Directors for our state administrator association, includes participating in regular calls with the New England and Northeast coordinators, in which we discuss growing trends across the region and the challenges facing secondary principals. We come up with solutions for our respective organizations and consider approaches for advocating for our students.
This week, our state coordinators, along with our partner administrators from the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), participated in the National School Leadership Advocacy Conference in Washington. We spent two days learning from each other, hearing from policy advocates, and identifying stories that would bring policy to life for state's Congressional delegation. Our organization has a number of priority areas, focusing on supporting the educator pipeline, mental health needs for our students and staff, and ensuring that programs are funded.
As part of our day at the Capitol offices, we met with all eleven of the Massachusetts' offices, having the good fortune to connect with Representatives Keating, Moulton, and McGovern in person, including meeting with Representative McGovern for nearly an hour. We also met with a number of our colleagues from across the country, and the challenges that we see play out in the media are very real across the nation.
This conference and advocacy day took place a few days after the terrible event in Nashville, and shortly after two school administrators were shot in Denver, helped underscore the very real fears and challenges that school leaders across the country are facing. There used to be some topics on which we could all agree - providing good schools for our students, supporting our public servants, and engaging in open-minded discourse. We are a small school community that has great resources for its students, staff members who are dedicated to their craft, and pride that runs deep locally. We strive to respect different perspectives, engage in dialogue, and provide safe learning environments for our students. Some of our colleagues across the country are not that fortunate, and some students are not that lucky.
We hope that our efforts on a macro level will impact us positively here at UHS. Already we are engaging in a productive dialogue with our state colleagues around programming and funds at the state level. If there are any validations from this past week's work, it is that we have needs, our students have needs, and the only hope we have for continuing to move forward is if we find that path together.
