JBD FOCUS NEWSLETTER
March 3, 2017
Busy Week at JBD!
We have been so busy here this week at John B. Dey! Starting with some of our fifth graders competing in the Battle of the Books, the STEAM Expo and Dr. Seuss celebrations and the second grade show, " Seussical the Musical" there has not been a dull moment! Congratulations to the "The Five Bookineers" who will go on to the semi-finals for the Battle of the Books! The STEAM expo was a smashing success! Many thanks goes to Karen Werder, Heather Long, and Kristen Moore for their hard work and wonderful organization for creating a memorable event. The second graders knocked it out of the park with the "Seussical" show and we appreciate the talented efforts of our music teachers, Amy Ansell and Symphony Foster for showcasing our second graders on Thursday night!
In the next couple of weeks, our classrooms will be focusing on their STEAM projects and experiences. Each grade level is hosting another grade level and teaching the students about their designs. In keeping with our curriculum and focusing on student interests, these experiences will be exciting for all.
In March, we are also going to become Math Maniacs as we generate incentives for our children to memorize those pesky math facts! Please help us out with that at home. Flash cards and games, repetition and practice, are the only way for the children to learn math facts and retain them for automaticity. The VBCPS curriculum is conceptually based and time does not permit the memorization of facts in school. Fast Math, TenMarks, games and centers are all utilized to assist and help our children memorize their facts, but home support is definitely needed! I have encouraged the teachers to send more math activities home for homework to assist with this effort.
Thanks for all you do to help us help your children! Enjoy your weekend,
Beth Bianchi

CLINIC CORNER
Information regarding management of lice in the school. If you have questions please call Michele Self R.N (757) 648-2447
Virginia Beach City Public Schools: Head Lice Procedures
Head lice are small insects that can be found on the head, and live close to the human scalp. Head lice are not known to spread disease. Head lice have difficulty attaching firmly to smooth or slippery surfaces like plastic, metal, polished synthetic leathers and other similar materials. Head lice cannot hop or fly and are spread by direct contact with the hair of an infested person.
Identification of student with head lice infestation by the school nurse
A student is identified with head lice infestation when the school nurse has identified live lice on the student's head, and/or nits are found within ¼ inch of the base of the hair shafts (scalp).
Screening, recommendations, and communication will be managed in a discreet manner to maintain student's confidentiality and privacy rights.
Exclusion; the student will not return to class, the parent/guardian will be contacted, and must pick the student up from school.
Treatment recommendations; the student must receive treatment for head lice before returning to school.
Parent/guardian education; the student's parent/guardian receives a copy of the Head Lice (Pediculosis) Education Handout. In elementary schools K-5, if 1 case of head lice infestation is identified in a classroom, A notification letter to parents/guardians, and a Head Lice (Pediculosis) Education Handout will be distributed to all students in that particular classroom.
Return to school; upon arrival, the student must report to the clinic, and the nurse will recheck the student to rule out continued head lice infestation.
Follow-up; the student will be rechecked by nurse in 14 days.
In elementary schools K-5, if evidence of greater than 1 case of head lice infestation is obtained by the school nurse, the nurse will complete head lice checks on all students in that particular classroom.
The most important aspect to managing head lice is the removal of the eggs or nits. The lice shampoo doesn’t wash the eggs away. Parents need to comb the eggs out of the hair to avoid the eggs from hatching.
Contact your school nurse if you have any additional questions or concerns.
