A (not so brief) History of India
Luke Hewitt
Early civilization
Between the 90th and 70th century BC, Early Indians began to populate the area that we now know as India.
Mesopotamian farmers
From 3300 BC to 2300 BC marked the age of Mesopotamian farmers agriculturalizing the Indus Valley region. They began to farm crops such as corn, and create their own scripts of writing
Hinduism
The religion of Hinduism originated in India in approximately 2000 BC. It still serves as the national religion of India and has spread throughout the planet.
Cyrus the Great
Many civilizations had ruled the area of India over the previous 1500 years until, in 538 BC, Cyrus the Great took over much of India for the Persian Empire.
Khan Empire
There was a lot of power change in the Indian area over about 1700 years. From the years 1200 AD to 1400 AD the Khan empire under Genghis Khan took control of many areas of India.
First European Settlement
In the year 1508, Portugal sent their forces into the kingdom of Kochi, took it over, and created the first settlement of Europeans in India.
English influence in India
Beginning in 1600, England began to surround India in its sphere of influence. During that time, the East Indies company was formed. Later, the British (Combination of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) took supreme rule in 1858
Mahatma Gandhi
Born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Gandhi was a preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement against Britain. He successfully led them to their freedom in 1947 and was later assassinated in 1948 for his role.
Flag of India
Adopted officially on July 22, 1947, just under a month before independence.
The saffron represents courage and peace.
The white represents peace and truth.
The green represents faith and chivalry.
The wheel represents Gandhi's wish for a self-sufficient economy.
Power Change
As you can see, India has had a lot of change over their long history. A ruler hasn't been sovereign for over 500 years in the history of the country. Either a new power arose, or an entire empire simply vanished.
