The Principal's Pen

East Coventry Elementary School

The ReadAThon continues! It is fun to watch students who are excited to add their minutes to their totals. To date, students have submitted almost 150,000 minutes of reading. CLICK HERE for more information or to donate to the ReadAThon. A portion of this year's proceeds from the ReadAThon will be used for an assembly program for the whole school in May. The ReadAThon continues until March 15th.

I wanted to share an update on the status of the Grade1-6 playground. The District is working closely with the contractors in order to move forward with the required work on drainage system, installation of equipment and the poured playground surface. The drainage work requires 2 to 3 days of heavy earth moving equipment to install the new system. The equipment would significantly impact the learning in many of the primary classrooms due to the close proximity of the future playground. Therefore, the work needs to be completed when there are breaks in the school schedule. Weather has played a factor in the work completion during the recent breaks. We are hopeful that the drainage work can occur during the upcoming spring break and the remaining work can commence immediately after. The Board of School Directors and District's Facility Department is monitoring the situation closely and hopeful to have a playground in spring prior to the end of the school year.

Kinder and Grade 3 Families- Please Read

The state of Pennsylvania mandates students entering Kindergarten, and again when students are in third grade, have a dental exam. Due to a snow day, dental exams will be completed by Dr. Monica Marwick on Wednesday, March 27, for any student in Kindergarten and Third grade who has not submitted a private dental exam form. There is no cost for the exam. If you would prefer your child have a private dental exam, there is still time to submit your dental forms, please call our school nurse, Mrs. Kohler with any questions or concerns at 610-469-5173.

CAUTION! Children at School

We have noticed an increase in the number of cars that are exceeding the 15 MPH speed limit on the school property. We ask for your utmost consideration to adhere to the speed limits at all times. Both East Coventry Police Department and OJRSD Police Department will be more visible in order to encourage drivers to slow down. Maintaining safe speeds is important for the safety of everyone especially our children. Thank you for your understanding and assistance.

News From the Nurse

It is that time of year again when illnesses, such as flu, strep throat, scarlet fever, and a number of viral infections, spread quickly through a school building. If your child is diagnosed with these illnesses, please contact the school nurse at 610-469-5173. Please be aware that it is important to keep your child home when they are ill so they can recover and so that they do not spread the illness. If your child is vomiting, has diarrhea, a sudden rash, or a fever over 100, please keep them home from school for at least 24 hours. If your child has missed a significant number of accumulated days, you may be required to provide a doctor's note. A physician's note is needed if a child misses 3 or more consecutive days.
