Great Things at NBS - #ColtPride

Dear North Barrington Families,

Happy Fall! As the seasons change, we are taking time to reflect on all the learning we have done so far this year. I can't help but think about how fortunate we all are to continue learning from each other each and every day. Our students have been doing a phenomenal job of learning in person and each of you have done an amazing job supporting us! Students continue to demonstrate how responsible, flexible, and invested they are in our school.

Additionally, our staff have been planning and working with our students to prepare for our fall conferences. I know you are going to be amazed at the success we have achieved in the first few months of school. We have set goals and are reaching them. We look forward to meeting with you in person or virtually.

We also have been working closely with our PTO on planning our Halloween parade and party. Thank you very much to all our Room Coordinators who have volunteered to host the fall fun!

As always, thank you for your continued support of our school. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions regarding your child's learning experience at North Barrington Elementary School, please feel free to contact me at 847-304-4870 or lwest@barrington220.org.

Enjoy your weekend,

Lisa

Halloween Parade and Parties

Halloween Parade and Parties:

Our Halloween parade and party will be held on Friday, October 29th from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. The parade will be from 1:30 to 1:45 and the party indoors from 1:45 to 2:30. Due to Covid mitigations, two-three Room Coordinators will host the party. No food will be allowed, however, we can provide decorated water bottles or goody bags with non-edible items for your child's classroom to take home at the end of the party. Please keep a look out for a communication from your child's Room Coordinator.

Please follow the below guidelines for costumes:

*No halloween masks, but face masks are required

*No political costuming

*No makeup or glitter

*No fake blood

*Children do not wear their costumes to school. They will change at school for the parade.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Upcoming Parent/Teacher conferences: Our fall conferences are on Wednesday, October 13th from 4 - 8 pm and Thursday, October 14th from 1 to 7 pm. October 14th and 15th are non-student attendance days. Please note, our Chinese Immersion will have a slightly different schedule to provide times for all our families in this program. We will again be using the online conference scheduler Meet the Teacher. The Meet the Teacher app for parents opened on Monday, October 4th at 8:30 am. An email with the conference link and instructions was sent on Friday, October 1st at 3PM. If you haven't already done so, you may schedule your conferences at nbs220.meettheteacher.com . Meet the Teacher will remain open to parents until midnight Sunday. Conferences are in person unless you email the teacher to request a Zoom link. If you have any questions, please call Jody Carroll at 847-381-4340.

PICTURE RETAKES

Picture Retake Day will be Monday, October 18th. Photographers will be here at 8:30AM

If you purchased pictures and would like retakes, your child should bring their pictures back to the photographer on the 18th.

Parents of students who missed Picture Day should pre-order online at ordercp.com and use code: 10015202.

Fidgets and Toys and Pokemon Cards

We need your help. We have had a lot of fidgets and other items brought to school. We are requesting that these items remain at home as they are becoming a distraction to learning. We will have a fidget/toy/card day as part of our spirit weeks during the year.

Thank you for supporting this request.

SPOTLIGHT ON STEM

This Week in STEM - 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade Boot Camps

This week, all classes in grades 2 and 3 participated in a second week of STEM Boot Camp! This means they came to STEM every day of the week to focus on a particular STEM topic. Students in 2nd grade learned how to program the Sphero robot. By working with their partner to complete several challenges, students practiced their collaboration and communication skills while learning to program a new robot!

Students in 3rd grade continued using the LEGO WeDo 2.0 kit to build a model of a pull-bot - a robot that pulls. After discussing force and friction, students used fair tests to determine what type of wheels they wanted to add to their robot in order to win a tug-of-war challenge. All kinds of design thinking, engineering and creativity was evident this week!

If you have any questions about STEM at NBS, please contact the STEM teacher, Mrs. Rita Thurston, at rthurston@barrington220.org.

Shield Testing Information

North Barrington's Shield Testing is every Wednesday. If you would like to opt your child out of testing, please email Jody Carroll in the office (jcarroll@barrington220.org). An opt out form will be sent to your parent portal of Infinite Campus that must be electronically signed and submited. Please note it may take up to 7 days for opt out forms to be processed.

If you have any questions, please call Jody at 847-381-4340.

Masks & Water Bottles

We are requesting that you please send extra masks for your child to keep in their backpack. This will ensure they have an additional mask if they need to switch to a different one later in the day.

Also, your child should bring a refillable water bottle to school each day. The bottle filling features are working but the drinking fountains are closed due to Covid.

Thank you.

North Barrington Elementary School

North Barrington Elementary School is one of eight elementary schools in the Barrington 220 School District. Our school serves K-5 grade students. The original North Barrington Elementary School opened in 1946, consolidating five one-room schoolhouses in the area. At the time of the school's dedication, it was heralded as a 'school for the motor age' because of special design features that accommodated students arriving by car and bus. Fifty years later, voters approved a referendum to rebuild North Barrington at the same sight.
