From the Principal

Happy New Year to you all! In education we learn to look at a year in a couple of different ways but with much of the same ideals. Now that January is here and 2019 becomes 2020, many of us look at our personal lives and what we have accomplished the last year in terms of success. We also think about ways that we would like to improve and how to make that happen. and create goals and plans.

At McKinley, that process takes place in May and August with a few differences. We set goals as individuals, grade levels, and as a school. We write them down and revisit them multiple times while assessing our progress as we go. Another difference is that we answer to more than ourselves when it comes to achievement. Winter break is a time to take a breath before we push on to the finish line. We would like to invite you to join us in the journey all the way to the finish line.

How can you help? You can help by supporting your students in their school work. Ask them questions about their learning encouraging them to share details of new concepts. Communicate with their teachers asking for assistance when needed and supporting classroom policies as well. The simplest way to help is to make sure that your children are at school every day and on time. Learning takes place all day long. For our McKinley community these simple steps are part of our culture. But still, it never hurts to visit the basics. Let’s start strong in 2020 making great gains toward our goals!

Fargo Public Schools Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten Registration for Fall 2020 opens online at www.fargo.k12.nd.us/registration on February 1, 2020. Child must be age 5 by July 31, 2020 to attend school in the fall.

Registration is a two-step process: online registration and document submission.

STEP ONE: Registration can be completed at home online anytime or at computer kiosks in the office at each Fargo Public elementary school building on the following dates with extended office hours:

  • February 24, 26, and 28 – 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • February 25, 27, and March 2 – 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

STEP TWO: Once online registration has been completed, families MUST bring the following documents to the school their child will attend to finalize their child’s registration:

  • Child’s certified birth certificate
  • Child’s current immunization record
  • Document (i.e. current city utility bill or bank statement) that includes parent/guardian name and address to verify the correct neighborhood school

If you do not know which school your child will attend, call 701.446.1043 or check online at www.fargo.k12.nd.us/boundarymaps.

Questions? Call the school office or Betsy Beaton at 701-446-1043.

Winter Weather

Reminder...please dress your students warmly. If the temperature does not exceed -15 below zero wind chill, we will go outside for the entire recess break! Each class is outside for 20 minutes.

Fargo Public Schools Illness Guidelines Children with the following symptoms should not be sent to school and/or school activities if they have:

  • Indication of a temperature of 100 degrees or above
  • Undiagnosed rash or sores
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • The student is diagnosed by a physician to have a contagious infection and places the student on a prescription. First dose of medicine must have been taken 24 hours prior to returning to school
  • Their temperature has remained below 100 degrees for 24 hours, without the use of acetaminophen, (i.e., Tylenol), etc. to keep the temperature down.

SCHOOL CLOSING/LATE START

If school is called off, all local radio and television stations are notified as early in the morning as possible. Check out our website too at www.fargo.k12.nd.us. Parents should always use their own judgement as to whether or not the weather is suitable for their children to go to school. If school is in session, and it is your judgement that your child should remain at home, that decision will be respected by the school and the absence will be excused. Sometimes the school day may be shortened because of weather, water, electrical issues, etc. When this happens, the district will contact the media to make a public announcement regarding the time of dismissal as well as any circumstances that may be important. The usual bus routes will run if possible and the school will follow the parents plans as indicated on Emergency Early Release form that is completed online at the beginning of the year.

On mornings when weather conditions warrant additional time to assess conditions, the Fargo Schools may use a late start procedure. This will allow time for the sunrise to occur, the weather to improve or the decision to cancel school for the day to be made. On these days, a two hour delay will be used. Road and street conditions will have an impact on bus schedules and some delays will occur. Elementary school starting times will be two hours later than the regular starting time. Before morning school programs and activities will not be held.

State of the Schools Address and Public Focus Group

The Fargo Public Schools will hold the 2019-20 State of the Schools Address and Public Focus Group on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 from 6 - 8:15 p.m. at South High School, 1840 15 Ave S, Fargo. Parents, staff and community members are invited to participate and are encouraged to pre-register by calling 701-446-1005 or signing up online at www.fargo.k12.nd.us/focusgroup. Attendees will receive reading materials electronically in advance of the event. For more information, visit www.fargo.k12.nd.us/focusgroup.
