Trigonometry in Volleyball
By Hailey Moore Block 4
Description
Volleyball is a sport that is played world wide. The object of the game is to make a ball hit on the other team’s side of the court by passing, setting, and hitting the ball. The first team to twenty five points wins. This sport uses trigonometry because hitters want to determine how far they want to hit the ball and liberos (defensive specialists) need to know where they should be on the court in order to receive a hit ball.
Application Problem
The libero (defensive specialist) is in the back row waiting to receive the ball. After the is hit, it is 3 feet in height above the libero’s arms and it is 1 foot away. Where the short leg and hypotenuse intersect, a 50 degree angle of elevation is made. How far away from the ball should the libero be? (What is the length of the hypotenuse?)
Answer: 3.9 feet
