Classroom: Mrs. Ana Centeno, Spanish I & II Classes

Subject: ¡Vamos a Viajar a Guatemala!

Purpose: The students will be able to know, culture and ways of life in Guatemala from a person who has traveled frequently to this South American country.

Presenter/Guest Speaker: Mrs. Debbi Smelser, Truman Middle School Special Education Assistant. Mrs. Smelser goes yearly to Guatemala to volunteer for an orphanage called: "Casa Bernabé." The students had a real-life experience knowing how beautiful and resilient its people are regardless of the volcanoes eruptions that the country have endured for more than a decade. Mrs. Smelser showed some Guatemalan hand-made artifacts & clothes. She showed pictures and pointed the location of Casa Bernabé with Google Earth.

What did our students learn? They never knew how poor the country is and that how an orphanage has helped so many children. They also learned that the education, in Guatemala, is the country's most valuable resource. More needs to be done; so that the country can thrive and get out of poverty.

School: Travis World Languages Academy

Classroom: Mrs. Lienhoa Nguyen, Pre-K to 5th grade Vietnamese Classes

Subject: The Chinese New Year is celebrated by over 2 billion people around the world, and students love learning about it!

Travis' students learned about and celebrated the Vietnamese New Year. They Explored different Holidays around the World and discovered that in Vietnam, there is a holiday so special it takes three days to celebrate! This holiday is called Tet Nguyen (pronounced nwen) Dan, or Tet for short.

Tet is the Vietnamese New Year. Tet begins during the full moon prior to spring planting, sometime in January or February. Like any special events, much preparation takes place. With so much to do, work and school grind to a halt as families prepare for tho most joyous time of the year. Although the holiday officially lasts three days, many people enjoy at least seven days break from their normal schedule. The New Year's moon, or Tet moon, reminds people to be honest and good.

Mrs. Nguyen decorated her classroom and the hallway with colorful lanterns, lights and a Vietnamese Photo Prop Backdrop! Her students had a great time learning about this wonderful culture!
