February News

Check out what's happening in February! We are blessed to teach such an amazing group of students!


  • Please check your child's Tiger Tracker weekly to keep up to date on all 3rd grade news!
  • Check out your child's Class Dojo report daily! Students who have a 95% or higher average for the week get to join the lunch bunch on Fridays! Students who have a 95% or higher for the 9-weeks will be invited to the Party with the Principal!
  • Students should be reading at least 15 minutes per night! Reading with your child helps to increase their fluency and build vocabulary. Their reading log will be checked weekly on Friday. They need to have at least 5 entries to earn their $5 bonus!
  • Transportation notes should be written on a separate piece of paper with your child's name, homeroom teacher, and date. Please remind your child to turn in their note in the morning!
  • Please help us by collecting Box Tops for Education! :)

February STEM Challenge

STEM is a great way for students to practice critical thinking and problem-solving skills! Check out this month's challenge and have your child complete the challenge at home! They can only use the materials listed on the "Teacher's Materials" page. Send us pictures of what your child comes up with! We can't wait to see all the great ideas to solve this month's problem!

Learning Targets

English-Language Arts

In February, we will begin to review story elements, analyzing characters, and understanding the central message of a story.

Challenge: Check out the video below and have your child decide, what is the lesson/central message that the author is trying to teach? Have them explain their thinking!

Reading Vocabulary: plot, character traits, actions, thoughts, words, sequence of events, central message, theme, lesson, moral

Writing Vocabulary: Opinion, persuasive, introduction, conclusion, linking words and phrases, reasons, examples, point of view

Book of the Month

Enemy Pie by Derek Munson

It was the perfect summer. That is, until Jeremy Ross moved into the house down the street and became neighborhood enemy number one. Luckily Dad had a surefire way to get rid of enemies: Enemy Pie. But part of the secret recipe is spending an entire day playing with the enemy!



In Math, we will be exploring Unit 4 - Fractions. We will look at how to use a ruler to measure an item and partition (divide) the item into equal parts of a whole. Students will also be identifying the unit fraction. A unit fraction is always one of the fractional unit. We will be digging even deeper and looking at various fractional shapes and identifying which fraction matches the shape.

Please continue to review and use standard notebook to spiral back and review standards that are being taught. We are using the binders daily, so please do not take any papers out as this will be an excellent review as we get closer to the GMAS.

Please continue to practice multiplication facts nightly as well. Students are getting excited about earning their ICE CREAM SUNDAE PARTY. If your child has not mastered their facts, they still have a chance to earn it. KEEP STUDYING!!

Science/Social Studies

In Science this month, we will be focusing on of the students' favorite units. We are studying the 5 regions of Georgia..... the climate, landforms, animals, and location. We will also have our second at home project. The project details will be in a letter coming home. Projects are due February 9th. I can't wait to see what all they learn and their creativity. We are using this RAP below to help us learn the regions.

In Social Studies we will begin our unit on Government. The students will be learning about the 3 branches of government and how they work together. We will be having a class election as well.
