Monthly SEL Theme for the Month of January: Cooperation (Tolerance and Brotherhood)
Brotherhood is the habit that reaches beyond comfortable relationships to extend a welcome to those who may be different. Brotherhood demonstrates the dynamics of Understanding, Tolerance, Sensitivity, and Acceptance.
These dynamics are such powerful habits of the heart that even when only one person reaches out to do right, the impact can be life long.
I would like to share a beautiful and meaningful story entitled “Starfish.”
"The Starfish Story"
There was a man who lived along the ocean. One morning, at about 5:00 a.m., when he could sleep no longer, he decided to take a walk along the beach. It was a foggy morning, and the first rays of the sun were slipping above the horizon. The man enjoyed the walk; it was as if the beach belonged to him. He glanced down on the beach and saw a figure that seemed to be dancing. He wondered why anyone would be on the beach so early; his curiosity caused him to quicken his pace. As he drew nearer, he realized that the figure was that of a young man, and he wasn't dancing --- he was throwing something into the water. As he drew very close, he realized that the young man was picking starfish off the beach and was tossing them back into the water.
"Why are you throwing starfish into the water?"
"The tide is going out, the sun is rising, and the starfish that are left on the beach will surely die." said the young man, continuing on his task.
"But that's such a waste of time and energy! There are so many starfish, and there are miles and miles of beach. What difference does it make?"
The young man thought for a moment. He reached down to pick up a starfish and said, "It makes a difference . . . to this one."
Adapted from “The Star Thrower” by Loren Eiseley
As you can see, brotherhood, to be preserved, must be practiced and lived each and every day. A good community cannot exist without it.
AN ACT OF KINDNESS FROM THE SIXTH GRADE...
MS Play: The Sound of Music
Classroom News!
Team 6A:
The Sixth grade kicked off the holiday break with a Student-led EdCamp. Students led 60 sessions for their peers. The sessions ranged from topics like, Coding in a Nutshell, ASMR, Slime, Who’s the Kidnapper, Surgery on a grape and so much more! Your students shined as both leaders and participators! What a joyful experience. Enjoy the break!
Team 6B:
Team 6B scientists discovered surface tension by guessing how many drops of water could fit on a penny. Some were surprised by their results, and repeated their experiment three times. In many cases, the dome created by a “skin” of water molecules enabled us to fit many more drops that we had expected. Surface tension also helped us to float a paper clip in a bowl of water. Another property of liquids that we investigated with was viscosity. Ask your scientists what they discovered about molasses, as compared to vegetable oil!
Team 6C:
Students on Team 6C participated in a Buddy Program with their 7th grade buddy. Students were able to branch out and spend time with a 7th grade buddy and worked together with ice breaking activities. Students also participated in Kid Edcamp and were able to mix among all of the sixth grade classrooms to learn a topic taught by their peers. It is so nice to mix-it-up and be with new people. Be sure to check out Twitter for pictures.

Team 6E:
Sixth grade students participated in Jericho Middle School’s very own “EdCamp.” The day before December recess was personalized and learner driven. Everyone was excited to break out into classrooms and share their experience and expertise as either presenter or receiver of new information. Students were given the opportunity to choose three topics of interest including but not limited to; Chess, Pancake Design, Coding, Juggling, Slime , Pillow Design, Cupcake Decor, Dance Party, Music Appreciation, Makeup Application, Funny Cartoons, ASMR, Ninja Stars, Marvel For Beginners, Chocolate Covered Strawberries, Friendship Bracelets, and Yummy Art You Can Eat. The students were very excited and can’t wait to do it again come February.
Team 7A:
Students of Team 7A modeled the steps of Mitosis using different kinds of candy. As an important part of the Next Generation Science Standards, modeling provides students with a visual and bodily-kinesthetic means of understanding important scientific processes such as cell division. The students used Tootsie Rolls as centrioles, Twizzlers as spindle fibers, and gummi worms as chromosomes. A few chromosomal deletions were noted as some gummi worms failed to make it to the end of the process.
Team 7B:
In ELA, Team 7B students participated in a gallery walk where they shared entries from their readers' response journals. This was a creative and fun way to promote the love of reading.
Team 7C:
Team 7C has been having a great time sharing their knowledge of algebraic expressions using Pear Deck and competing in teams using Quizlet live! Students have been working together to create various ways to write equivalent forms of expressions including variables and polynomials. They will be applying this concept in our next unit on multi-step equations. The students love algebra and are super "X-cited" to see what's next!
Team 8A, 8B & 8C:
This month, as a fun, culminating activity for their poetry units, all eighth grade students participated in an ROEM (rap poem) project in their ELA classes. For this project, students were given the opportunity to work in small groups with students on other teams. After selecting and reading one of six popular verse novels, they composed roems filled with figurative language and set to the music of their choice. Next, it was time to record and edit, which gave students an opportunity to learn and utilize video-editing apps such as iMovie and Final Cut Pro. We ended the month with students enjoying the "BIG ROEM REVEAL," where students were able to showcase their final video productions. We have some serious rapping skills in this grade!

Tips from the School Nurse
January: Happy people have fewer aches and pains
Have you ever noticed when your stress level is high your neck starts to hurt, or sometimes your back aches? Highly stressed people can also be prone to digestive problems, migraines or insomnia.
Our happiness level affects our perception of the severity of pain. Happy people, who are engaged in an activity that makes them laugh and brings joy to their lives, often rate the degree of pain lower on a scale of 1-10. The person who is unhappy, angry, and has a negative attitude toward life tends to perseverate and dwell on the pain. They focus most of their energy on the feeling of pain. Thus they perceive the pain as higher on a scale of 1-10. We’ve all known these two different types of people. The happy person who has chronic pain, but won’t let the pain stop him from participating in life. It may slow him down a little, but he refuses to let the pain overtake his life. The unhappy person focuses his attention on the pain, and can’t see beyond the pain. It negatively affects his quality of life.
Feelings of happiness release endorphins into the bloodstream. Endophins make you feel good, reduce anxiety and reduce sensitivity to pain. Thus, happiness is considered to be a natural painkiller.
Recent studies have shown Happiness protects your heart, strengthens your immune system, helps prevent and alleviate aches and pains and combats disease and disability. Wow!! If I told you all that could be achieved by the latest health craze, you’d forget about loading up your diet with turmeric and other anti-inflammatory herbs, and most of you would be running to the store to buy this magic remedy!!
Happiness won’t cost you any money and it won’t take up your time .
Next months topic: Happiness combats disease and disability.
