About the Workshop:
Science classes present excellent opportunities for nonfiction writing, including alternatives to traditional lab reports and controversial science topics. Participants will learn how to implement a wide range of science writing opportunities in their classes using informational, narrative, and argumentative styles. We will use the claims-evidence-reasoning model in discussing lab results, essay topics, and scientific misconceptions. The workshop will emphasize assignments and strategies that are ready to implement immediately in science classes and labs—from article summaries and laboratory abstracts to academic language and short answer templates. The comprehensive packet of materials will include handouts and other materials that are ready for classroom use.
Outcomes:
- Acquire the skills essential to designing, modeling, and grading writing prompts and assignments in science classes and labs
- Explore alternatives to traditional lab reports that fulfill Common Core and NGSS expectations
- Learn how to implement several strategies for argumentative writing in science classes and labs.
- Develop a wide variety of science writing strategies that can be implemented immediately in the classroom writing process
- Model through discussion and lesson planning how science teachers, English teachers and library/media specialists can collaborate in improving science comprehension through writing.
