Message From Principal Engdall
“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. King believed that a life lived in service of others was a life well-lived. The vision of peace is only possible through action, or service, that is based on the respect, understanding, and gratitude that has already been established.
In the speeches delivered by Dr. King, there is a clear and present theme that work remained to be done and we know, still does. As we enter a new year, the time to heed Dr. King’s words are with us. It is through our collective efforts that we continue to work for a more equitable, peaceful, harmonious society. As we teach our children and build our families, we have many opportunities to further this growth and practice peace in our homes, schools, and communities.
As our children grow, their foundation in valuing humanity can be seen through service-oriented work and experiences. Because Montessori children of all ages internalize the importance of contribution to the classroom community, it is only natural for them to apply that mentality and behavior to the community at large.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18, is a day of service that celebrates the civil rights leader’s life and legacy. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
We hope our families have the opportunity to spend the holiday giving back in some way and we look forward to seeing you back at school on Tuesday, January 19th.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Laura Hildwein
Grounding Techniques
Many things cause feelings of stress and anxiety. At times, we may feel overwhelmed or become paralyzed. That’s when we can use grounding techniques.
Grounding techniques help distract us from overwhelming feelings and focus on what is happening in the present.
The 5,4,3,2,1 Method
While taking deep breaths name:
5 things you can see
4 things you can hear
3 things you can touch
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
Visualization
While taking deep breaths think of something that brings you joy. Visualize all aspects of what you are thinking about.
For example, the warm sand at the beach, hearing the seagulls and the waves, feeling the sun and the breeze etc.
Math
Do times tables in your head
Count backwards from 100
For kids count slowly to 5
Use 1 of these grounding techniques as soon as you start to feel stress. These techniques can work for children as well.

Open Enrollment Applications
Last week, the Phoenix Elementary School District mailed open enrollment forms to every Shaw household. These forms are required every year - one for every student, to continue enrollment at our school.
They are time and date stamped when they are received, so if it isn’t on your priority list to submit yet- it should be!
Covid precautions in place, we are asking that you scan and submit your open enrollment forms by email to Christina.Girard@Phxschoools.org . However, if you cannot submit electronically, you can mail the form back to us, or drop it off in person. If you drop off in person, we are asking out of courtesy to office staff to reduce exposure to please utilize the black metal drop box to the right of the office door (looks like a standing mailbox) and not to ring the doorbell or hand the form off in person. These forms are due NO LATER THAN MARCH 1st, 2021. Thank you! (Letters and forms are provided here for anyone who did not receive one, or needs an additional form.)
Sibling Enrollment:
If you have a child that is 3 or turning 3 prior to August 12, 2021 and you would like to enroll them into our Primary program, please fill out the attached sibling application and submit to Christina.Girard@Phxschools.org no later than March 15, 2021. Thank you!

Student Work Packet Pick Up
Our teachers periodically have sent messages to parents to pick up student work outside of the office. If you are a parent looking to pick up something other than a laptop, all work should be outside organized by teacher for pick up. Office staff does not have any information about the student work outside. We are finding that parents will ring the bell to ask about student work outside. Please relay any questions about these packets directly to the teacher. If you are unable to locate your students packet, please direct your question to the teacher. Thank you!
