FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School :: November 8, 2016
From the Principal's Desk...
The new school year started off with the installation of our new Pastor, Monsignor Torres. The OLQHS Community welcomes our new Pastor! He is very often seen on campus visiting the children. He especially loves to visit our PK and K classes! His presence validates the hard work of the students and the faculty and staff. Monsignor celebrated our Opening School Mass on September 9 and we all came together again for Monsignor’s birthday celebration. Both of these masses were a wonderful example of creativity and talents that abounds on our campus.
The 1st quarter saw volleyball and football games, cheerleaders cheering, jazzline dancing and our Baronettes performing for all of us. Class representatives were elected to Student Council, Beta Officers were chosen and all were installed to service our community. We have gone to NASA, the pumpkin patch, 5th grade attended their Right to Life round table, the book fair and magazine sale brought many to our campus, and our pep rallies were full of fun and enthusiasm for OLQHS.
The Heavenly Fish Fest saw many smiling faces as our little ones brought their fish to be weighed. The day was beautiful! Beta representatives helped setup, clean up and serve food. Families from grandparents on down enjoyed the festivities of the day. Our Annual Carnival saw many people enjoy a day with amazing food and fun-filled activities. The hit of the day was the “Dunking Booth”!
The students have heard from the Attorney General’s representatives on internet safety. A full house of concerned parents were present for the evening presentation by the two representatives. 8th grade students have enjoyed meeting their 2nd grade buddies. The fire department has visited the Pre-K and Kindergarten. We have been busy since August 17th.
The beginning of each school year is a special time. With grateful hearts, we thank God for all the many blessings He brings to our community – the accomplishments of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, the support of our parents and the generosity of the OLQHS community. Our school has served the flood victims of Louisiana, brought support to the family of Quentin Savoie, and now we begin the season of giving through our food drive, coat drive and Operation Christmas Child. We start the second quarter of the 2016 – 2017 school year with prayers to continue our work and our accomplishments.

CLASSROOM NEWS
SPANISH:
- Thank you for sharing your stories and honoring your ancestors while learning about El Dia de Los Muertos. What a wonderful way to keep the memories alive of those who helped to shape our beliefs and traditions. I feel as if I was able to meet everyone's family! - Sra. Smith
THIRD GRADE:
We are starting multiplication and LOVING IT!
Also, have been working on Louisiana symbols and essays for All Saints Day
ART:
- Art Classes this year have already had a wonderful start! We already have thirteen Students in the Hall of Fame. That means the student has three or more pieces of Art on Artsonia, five or more members of their Fan Club, and five or more comments on their artwork. Those that achieve the Hall of Fame will have their names on a chart in the art building, receive a certificate of membership (and three pieces of candy), and their names will be printed in the FHS. Congratulations to the following: Kindergarten--Amelia Broussard, Bentley Soileau, and Sylvia Armentor. First Grade--Remi Fontenot, Eloise Thompson, Andrew Louviere, Adyson Swire, Alison Courville, and Lawton Bordelon. Second Grade--Campbell Louviere, Tristin Bullard, and Jacob Celestine. Eighth Grade--Gavin Broussard. Good job, everyone!
Kindergarten started the year with beautiful Self-Portraits, American Flags, and scary spiders.
First Graders did a full body Self Portrait, the American Flag, and Mickey Mouse.
Second Grade studied basic shapes as well as capturing bubbles on paper. The Library and Art teamed together to promote the Library Theme "Read With Me".
Third Grade students drew a parent and child animal, of their choosing, reading a book together. They are displayed in the Fine Arts Building and Library. Third Graders are also working on their symmetrical Angels for Advent.
Fourth Grade started the year drawing their hands and shoes and are now working hard on their Christmas Gourd Ornaments.
Sixth Grade has just begun the new nine weeks with learning how to draw exactly what they see. They are drawing a familiar cartoon character that they are looking at UPSIDE DOWN and will draw it UPSIDE DOWN. Good training!! We will soon begin an original abstract taught by local artist, Jay Bowdon.
Seventh Grade Band/Chorus/Art students did a wonderful job on their Zentangles and their free standing 12 inch Santa/Elf Gourds. They have done a beautiful job!
Eighth Grade Rotation has been very busy. They created beautiful Zentangles, Baby Self Portraits on the Wacom Tablets in the PC Lab, did a Vincent Van Gogh Art History Study, and are creating their own Birdhouse with a Van Gogh painting in his style.
- Remember the Art Department at Christmas time. If you go to the Artsonia website's Gift Shop and purchase something with your child's artwork on it, OLQHS's Art Department receives 20 % of the sale. Many of the items make great stocking stuffers and gifts. Grandma would rather have a coffee mug with their grandchild's artwork on it than another scarf. Buy the family luggage tags that are personalized and unique. There are lots of sales at Christmas.
Remember in January or February we have an Artsonia T-Shirt Day and your student can wear their art proudly on that day. Remember in art class we are creating, making messes, and having fun!
Best Wishes for the Seasons Ahead!

OLQHS is a Cell Phone Free Zone
Please when driving through carline; remember that school zones are cell phone free zones. The crossing guards as well as duty teachers have noticed that there are quite a few people who are on their cell phones while picking up their children. When the Louisiana legislature voted the cell phone free zones into law, I am sure they were concerned with the safety of the children of Louisiana.
ASBESTOS STATEMENT
EACH YEAR PARENTS MUST BE INFORMED THAT THE SCHOOL HAS COMPLIED WITH ALL NATIONAL STANDARDS REGARDING ASBESTOS ON CAMPUS.
