School Board Recognition
New this year! The school board will be recognizing students and staff for outstanding achievements.
Last night the board recognized two CCA staff members.
Whitney Eister, CCA Middle School Nurse
On August 25 a student at CCAMS began to choke on a hot dog at lunch. Another student alerted Principal Mr. Fox that a student was sick in the restroom. Mr. Fox went into the restroom and then alerted Mrs. Eister. She took the student to the office. The student lost his airway to breathe so Mrs. Eister performed the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged some of the obstruction. The student was able to breathe and speak again but as Whitney continued to monitor him, he again lost his airway and Whitney did the Heimlich maneuver again to clear his airway. He then began choking and lost his airway and required the Heimlich for a third time. Whitney ended up successfully doing the Heimlich 3 times (6-8 thrusts each time). She is truly a lifesaver!
Emily Kriegl, CCA High School Science Teacher
This past summer, Emily applied for an Iowa STEM Teacher Externship and after the full-time, six-week summer position, she was recognized by the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory council for successfully completing the 2022 Iowa STEM Teacher Externship at Johnson County Conservation.
The externship aligns STEM educators with knowledgeable and skilled industry employees who help bring the classroom curriculum to life. Iowa STEM Teacher Externships provide educators with the exposure to answer questions about real-world application, prepare students for careers they may have in the future and improve educational experiences.
Easy Alternative to Making Meal Account Payments
Did you know you can set-up recurring payments to meal accounts?
Families can put money in the student meal account by logging into the PowerSchool parent portal account and go to Purchases and Payments. There are options to set-up recurring payments to the meal accounts.
Dr. Seymour has been "Checking-In" with CCA Staff
The staff at North Bend Elementary, Amana Elementary and Clear Creek Elementary spent time with Dr. Seymour engaging in great conversation. Dr. Seymour will be "Checking in" with all staff in our 7 attendance centers on a regular basis. Next stop Tiffin Elementary.

Mental Health Matters: Brought to you by the CCA School Therapists
A nurturing space can go by many names: calm down corner, cozy spot, zen den… These spaces aim to provide children with a safe, quiet, and calm space they can go to when they need a break to self-regulate. A calm down corner should not be a space for time-outs or to be used as a punishment. It is a space kids should want to go to when they feel big feelings and/or need to calm down. Cozy spots have been proven to help kids control impulsive behavior, improve communication skills, and better understand and cope with different emotions.
It is important to remember that kids do not always act out because they want to. Sometimes it happens because they simply do not have the skills required to control their actions when overwhelmed with emotions. A cozy spot provides kids with a space to practice self-regulation skills.
