February 2017 Edition I

Library Updates

These past couple of weeks, we've been busy working with teachers and students on a variety of projects. We've worked with...

  • Mr. Wilson's 7th grade English students on their independent reading project. Students were also encouraged to participate in this year's Rotary Club Essay Contest. Click HERE to see our book talk slides.
  • Ms. Hashem's 7th & 8th grade ESOL students on a research project related to their cultural heritage. Students will be creating posters to display during Longfellow's Heritage Night on Friday, March 17th.
  • Ms. Mulqueen's 8th grade English students on their research related to the Civil Rights Movement. Click HERE to see our resource guide. Students created digital posters using Google Apps.
  • Ms. Nightingale's 8th grade English students on a Speed Dating with Books activity. Students went on a number of short book dates in order to meet some "just right" books. Click HERE to see the scorecard!
  • Mr. Kellams-Berger and Ms. Hodge's students on research skills lessons: conducting keyword searches, using the FCPS databases, evaluating websites, and using Noodle Tools to create Works Cited pages.

In Other News...

  • Our winner of the Silent Sustained Reading pizza party for the second marking period is... Mr. Wilson's class! All Lancer Time classes have an equal chance of winning the third quarter pizza party. Students are encouraged to participate in SSR on Tuesday afternoons!

  • Students are reminded to return overdue books. We're about to start a new marking period-- all LMS students should kick it off with clean library accounts!

Battle of the Books Update

As a reminder, Battle of the Books (BOB) meets on Thursday afternoons in Room 121--across from the library. We are currently reading and discussing this year’s Virginia Reader’s Choice books (in no particular order). We are asking all BOB members to fill out this form for each of the books that they read. Ultimately, the book questions that they generate will be used for practice rounds of our competition. To find out more about this club, please visit the Battle of the Books Website.
