Electrostatic Spray Painting

How does it work?

Charged paint leaves the nozzle of an electrostatic spray gun. The object that is going to be sprayed will be grounded (neutral, no charge) or given a charge that is opposite to the paint's charged particles. Due to this polarity, the paint becomes attracted to the object, and reduces the paint that is used. The explanation for this is stated in the Law of Electric charges, "opposite charges attract" and "charged and neutral objects attract each other." The paint particles can either be charged in the reservoir before entering the spray gun barrel or in the spray gun barrel itself. Some say that this method is preferred because all of the particles get uniformly charged as they go through the barrel.

History of Electrostatic Spray Painting

The first electrostatic spray painter was invented in 1931, by Mr. Harold P. Ransburg. He worked for his father's business and was given the job of spray painting a cookie jar. Through endless experiments, he perfected the technique known as the "grid method" or "No. 1 Process" over the next several years and electrostatic spray painting was used to paint guns, bazookas, and ammunition boxes during World War II. He went on to produce a hand held spray gun with a different design in which the paint became charged as it left the spray gun making the technique more precise over the next few years. This was called the "No.2 Process Bell" and was put into production use in 1951. This process is what is still used by spray painters today.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF ELECTROSTATIC SPRAY PAINTING

1. There is very little waste, and no overspray because the paint adheres to the surface uniformly, quickly and precisely. With regular spray painting it is very difficult to paint 3 dimensional objects, however with electrostatic spray painting, any shaped grounded object can be spray painted.

2. Less pathogens and harmful chemicals are emitted into the air because the paint adheres quickly and precisely to the object.

3. Electrostatic spray painting is more cost effective because less paint is used and there is very little mess afterwards so the total time for electrostatic spray painting an object is substantially less than the regular spray painting. The paint adheres directly to the metal surface as it is atomized when leaving the spray gun. The excellent uniform spray process means a better finish that is professional and does not have to be redone 2 or 3 times. It has an enamel like perfect uniform finish to it.

FInal Thoughts on Electrostatic vs. Regular Spray Painting

Electrostatic spray painting really has no disadvantages. It costs less than regular spray painting, uses less paint, uses less energy and manpower, and is environmentally friendly. With regular spray painting, the object being painted needs to be directly in front of the spray gun. This makes it difficult to spray paint objects with unusual shapes or round items such as poles. Only the surface directly in front will be painted. However, with electrostatic spray painting, the atomized charged paint wraps around the object quickly and with precise adherence. With a regular spray gun, air pressure is used to push out the paint making the paint spray out in various directions in front of the gun. With an electrostatic gun, centrifugal force pushes out the paint and it sprays directly to the object's surface. You may ask, can all items be done this way? The answer is pretty much yes as long as the item is grounded. However, non metal items can be placed by grounded ones or metal ones so that the electrostatic method can be used. Solvents can be added to the paint to charge it and at that point you are ready to perform electrostatic spray painting on almost anything. This makes the electrostatic spraying method superior to the regular spray painting.
