Power to the Citizens
Citizens rights are being overthrown
Thesis Statement
Citizens should be allowed to live their life in freedom without the government stopping them by demonstrating freedom of individuality and the right to live a life.
"Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut and "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson
In “Harrison Bergeron” and “The Lottery”, both texts have to deal with a government that restricts their citizens freedoms. Harrison was put in jail because the government did not like that he was more handsome and better than everyone else, while “The Lottery”, citizens were being picked out of a black box to be forced to death by the government.
Quote and Analysis
“Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else” (Vonnegut 1). This quote helps my thesis because the government is making all these people be the same, and won’t have diversity in their society. They don’t have their freedom of speech because the government will make them be less than what they are. They were rebelling against the government and Harrison ended up being killed.
Quote and Analysis
"It isn't fair," she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head” (Jackson 7). This quote helps my thesis because the citizens are killing people for a reason. The town citizens have no freedom of speech, being killed and not being able to object to it is violating human’s rights. Everyone has a right to speech, even if it is a tradition like the lottery.
Harrison Bergeron
Harrison was a main part of the story. He was trying to overthrow the government because of what they were doing. The government was making them wear handicaps, they were used to make everyone look and feel equal. Even though that's not what they wanted. Harrison took the stand because no one else was brave enough to. In the long run he had not succeed with overthrowing the government, he got killed while trying.
Mrs.Hutchinson
A town lottery wasn't your usual lottery as it is used today. Mrs.Hutchinson's was a great participe of the lottery. People were being put up to be killed and she was fine with other people being killed because it was a town tradition, but one day she was the one to be called on and die. With this news she greatly rejected and tried to say this was no fair. In the end she had gotten killed either way.
Citizens standing up for each other
In "The Lottery" Mrs.Hutchinson was killed while she was in there town lottery, she was the one who got chosen. Now in "Harrison Bergeron" harrison was trying to overthrow the government because he didn't think that the way the government was making them live was right.
Conclusion
Citizens should be allowed to live there live in freedom without the government's every judgement or rule blocking them. In this upcoming election I don't think one person has that big wow factor like he or she has the whole package. I believe there are good and bad things about every candidate this year. I don't know really who I would pick because I think no one is just amazing.
