WHAT'S HAPPENING IN FOURTH GRADE...
Math: Students wrapped up Chapter four on division. Please continue to work with your student on long division. You can teach them any way you'd like. It does not have to be the common core way. Chapter five will on factors, multiples, and patterns. New vocabulary will include: common factors, common multiples, composite numbers, divisible, factors, and patterns.
Social Studies: This week we looked at different types of maps and the roles they play in geography. Vocabulary terms include longitude, latitude, prime meridian, equator, and hemisphere.
Writing: Students have begun a unit on Book Reviews. They are picking a book to write their opinion about to create a piece of writing to sway others to read it. Students need to have their book choice figured out by tomorrow. It needs to be a book they have already read, not something they have to read before writing.
Science: Students have been going through an energy unit which encourages students to think about the energy that things need to move. Students are exploring how energy makes things go, from powering vehicles to moving one’s body. They are experimenting with rubber band racers to discover the relationship between how much energy is stored in a material and how much is released. They have also started investigating the role that hills play in making roller coasters move and the energy transfer that happens when two objects collide. Students are thinking about the world in terms of energy and how this helps them make sense why things speed up and slow down. Hands-on activities are focusing on engineering, testing hypotheses and using results to develop their ideas.
PE-Nut: We had our first PE-Nut lesson with Mrs. Bauer. She made us delicious Veggie Rollups after completing a nutrition survey. The Healthy Book Bag is making its way around our classroom. Be sure to read some of the books with your children!
