The Hall Way...
Hello Northwood families!
Last Thursday D200 made the decision to stay remote through Friday, November 6, given the current metrics. We know that many of our students were looking forward to returning to the building and our staff is working to support them. Please reassure them that our building is set up and ready to go for students, and our staff is ready to teach in person whenever the McHenry County Health Department Metrics tells us we can safely return.
On Friday during our P.R.I.D.E. groups the students discussed self advocacy. They watched a video that shared five helpful tips listed below:
Self Advocacy Helpful Hints
1. Believe in Yourself.
2. Determine where you are having trouble.
3. Figure out who the best person to talk to might be.
4. Send an email to that person.
5. Write down any suggestions you get from that person.
At the end of the lesson we had them put what they learned into action by emailing a teacher or other staff member to ask them a question or ask for more guidance. Please ask your student who they emailed and encourage them to continue to use the five helpful hints.
This week Student Council is sponsoring a Fall Spirit Week. Each day we have a theme and students are asked to upload a selfie or participate in a flipgrid. The themes are outlined below if you would like to remind your students. Once we have all of the photos and videos we plan to put together a video filled with school spirit!
Thank you for your continued support of our students and staff. Please never hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything. Warhawks take care of each other and we are here to work together and support each other. Have a wonderful and groovy week!

Report Cards and Honor Roll Recognition
First quarter report cards will be mailed home this week.
If students earn honor roll or high honor roll, they will receive an invitation with their report card inviting them to our Honor Roll Recognition Drive Thru on November 6. Be sure to RSVP when you get this invite so we have enough muffins.
Quarterly Honor Roll: Throughout the school year Northwood Middle School Honor Roll is posted to recognize those students who demonstrate outstanding achievement. In addition, these students will be recognized each quarter for their academic achievements.
High Honor Roll GPA 3.5-4.0 and no grade lower than a B-
Honor Roll GPA 3.0 – 3.49 and no grade lower than a C-
All Hybrid students’ parents must use the Parent Portal each day to verify the symptom checker when we move to in-person learning. Have you signed up for the Parent Portal yet?
Parent Portal vs. Canvas Observer: What's the Difference?
District 200 uses two platforms to both instruct and report grades. Your Canvas Observer account allows you to see course work that is occurring in your student's classes. In Canvas, you will be able to see assignments, quizzes, and material being covered in class. You can also receive email alerts about announcements your student's teacher makes to the class.
In your Parent Portal you will be able to see your student's overall grade in a course as well as individual assignment and assessment grades. While you may not be able to see the actual assignment like you would in Canvas, you can still see some short details about the assignment by clicking on it. The Parent Portal also allows you to see some basic information about your student in the district, such as attendance and their schedule.
For help with either of these platforms, or to get signed up with an account, please contact the school.

NMS Library
Writing Club will not be meeting on October 28th. See you on November 4th!
Northwood's library is now checking out books! Library books will be delivered to you and families will be responsible for returning them. Before you can check books out, a parent or guardian needs to fill out one of these forms:
We now have an outdoor library book return bin! It is located near the school's front doors and will be available during the school day, weather permitting. Students with overdue library books will be receiving email notices. Please return your overdue library books as soon as possible. Thank you so much for taking good care of your library books during this time!
Please feel free to contact Ms. Parrent at mparrent@wcud200.org if you have any questions. Happy Reading!
