District Goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.
BSD Response to Possible Student Walk-outs
The February 14, 2018 Florida school shooting has ignited a national discussion regarding school safety and the rights of staff and students to learn and work in a safe environment. As a result, several events are being promoted through the media, including national school walk-outs on March 14 and April 20.
The Beaverton School District has provided guidance to staff to prepare for these events, with student and staff safety as the priority. It is important for all students to feel safe and supported. Staff have been directed to develop a supervision plan for students who choose to participate in student-initiated events, as well as students who choose not to participate.
School attendance will be taken before and after the events. Students may not leave campus and must follow school protocols. Should they choose otherwise, they will be unsupervised and unexcused. Instruction will continue during any walk-out events. Staff will not participate in walk-outs, except to provide supervision.
We understand parents may wish to show their support for students. We ask that you gather on sidewalks or public spaces, rather than on school property. If you choose to go on campus or enter the school building, you will be required to follow all visitor/volunteer check-in processes.

District Calendar for 2018-2019
Just a reminder… The start date for the 2018-2019 school year is Monday, August 27, 2018. This information was first published in June 2016 following the announcement of collaboration time and the addition of nine student days over three years.
Starting before Labor Day is a change in practice, so we want to make sure parents are aware. Please download the calendar below, or visit the District calendar webpage to view other important dates and calendars in several other languages.
Local Option Levy Renewal on May 15, 2018 Ballot
On Monday, January 22, 2018, the Beaverton School Board unanimously adopted a resolution to place a five-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election.
If approved, Ballot Measure #34-284 would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year.
In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton's elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools.
iX18 Will Debut at Aloha High School Wednesday, March 21
Have you ever seen a petting zoo filled with robot animals? Middle schoolers at Cedar Park are on their way to creating one that you can visit at iX18. They start with Chromebooks, programmable controllers, motors, cardboard, paint, and glue. Add a healthy dose of imagination and perseverance, and you get amazing results. Visit iX18 and see this and exhibits from over 40 schools around the district.
The first annual BSD Innovation Expo (iX18) is an all-community event that highlights, celebrates and amplifies the innovative and creative ways that students are learning, and teachers are teaching.
iX18 will showcase and celebrate fantastic ideas that are happening today in our schools. Come prepared to be amazed at what kids learn, do, and make on their path to becoming Future Ready.

How is Early Release Going?
Now that we have had Early Release for seven months, how it is going? In a survey conducted in February, here is what some of our principals said about Early Release in their schools:
“The staff highly value this time and are very focused. It has been wonderful to be able to meet together as entire staff on the 1st Wednesdays.” – Scarlet Valentine, Errol Hassel Elementary School
“The teachers value the time together to collaborate to better meet the needs of all learners.” – David Nieslanik, Southridge High School
“Our specialists and Instructional Assistants have appreciated the opportunity to be part of professional development opportunities and collaboration. Teachers appreciate this time so much and it's making a significant positive impact on instructional practices.” – Stacy Geale, Beaver Acres Elementary School
“My staff find the time so valuable. It is a jolt of energized time mid-week to dig into learning, student achievement, and collaboration.” – Erin Miles, Fir Grove Elementary School
“The collaboration time has been great this year. Our parent community has been supportive, and this year’s early release transition has gone smoothly.” – Matt Pedersen, Mountain View Middle School
“We could not imagine how we would be implementing the new math adoption without this time. Teachers are leaning into the work, helping lead PD with one another, and value the time.” – Angela Tran, Hazeldale Elementary School
