Battle of the Books
We are excited to share that South Elementary is again sponsoring a reading competition this year, designed to increase active and ongoing engagement with books called Battle of the Books, also known as B.O.B. Here’s what you need to know:
What is it?
B.O.B. is an incentive program where students read nine pre-selected books AS A TEAM within a three week period. Think of it like reading as a team sport! Teams are then tested on their knowledge and understanding of the books during a “battle” during Library class at the end of the three weeks. After every homeroom class has had a chance to compete, the winning third and fourth grade teams from each class will venture into battle on Friday, Feb. 22. during I LOVE TO READ Week.
Books will appeal to a variety of interests and include several levels of length and difficulty. All of the books are available for check-out (we have 30 copies of each title). Students can turn in one B.O.B. book for another B.O.B. book any morning before the bell rings to increase opportunities to read as much as possible!
What are the benefits?
We offer opportunities to connect with other students to discuss phenomenal books, serious bragging rights, traveling classroom trophies, and gift cards to Scholastic for the winning team in each grade level.
Who can participate?
Any student who wishes to participate may do so – teams are formed within homerooms.

Read with your child and for your child. Take turns reading aloud each night at bedtime!
Ask your son/daughter about the book.
Encourage. Read alongside them with your own book.
Adjust your schedule. If you feel your child is motivated, adjust your after school or evening routine to accommodate more reading time.
