Move Over, Toynbee Tiles, The Drop Deads are Here!
At the end of the 20th century, there were (and still are) the Toynbee Tiles, placed in random streets all around the world. No one has yet discovered their meaning...(see sample at right)
In 2015, there’s a new kind of treasure hunt taking place! The hints are called “Dead Drops” and they’re hidden in walls and other surfaces around the world. You just need to know where to look. This treasure, however, isn’t buried on an uninhabited island, it’s all around us.
And there’s another twist: the treasure chests are USB drives hidden in plain sight, and the "gold is what’s on them." (I don't know what that means; I guess once you find one, you'll have to plug-in to find out more...Let me know what it is, please!)
Bartholl, a Berlin-based artist, started placing the USBs 5 years ago and has since seen others join in and replicate his work – building a large international community of dead drops to visit.
