Mustangs Complete their First Week of Distance Learning!

Thank you to our parents, teachers, students, administrators, support staff, and community for working together as we embarked on our first week of Distance Learning. I am happy to report that our teachers are beyond pleased with student participation and attentiveness as we shifted to a brand new learning environment. I personally want to thank you PARENTS for your patience as we start this process and find a rhythm that works for our Walnut Mustang scholars.

Let's continue to work together and make sure that our 2,200+ students have the best experience possible as we await the eventual return to physical school.

Thank you,

Dr. Ryan Maine

Principal

WALNUT HIGH SCHOOL DISTANCE LEARNING SCHEDULE

Big picture

About our schedule

  • Our distance learning schedule follows the recommended and required amount of instructional time for all students. Additionally, we created tutorial time after lunch for our teachers and students to use for the whole group, small group, or individual instruction, intervention, enrichment, or remediation. This time may also be used for Office Hours, homework time, GLC appointments, Social-Emotional Support, SST, 504, and IEP time.

Social Emotional Support for our Students

  • In 1997, 2004, and 2018, National studies found that school connectedness and family connection were the two most important factors predicting positive outcomes for students during their high school years.

  • It is critical that WHS, our students, and their families continue to improve our connection to each other.

  • At WHS we work to ensure that there are many layers of support that surround each student. Our goal is that if a student needs support, they are able to obtain support by choosing from several options.

  • The "Need Emotional Support" option on our webpage provides students a way to privately reach out and ask for support. Based on the student’s initial request, a staff member will reach out to first ensure their safety and well-being and then to listen. Often students need someone to listen as they process concerns they are having. Based on the issue, the responding staff member will assist the student to make connections to family members or other supportive WHS faculty who can help.

  • Students are not allowed to record without teacher permission.
  • New legislation (AB 77) states that if a student is absent 3 days in the week, the parent will be contacted to support the student to re-engage with Distance Learning.
  • Normal grading policy begins the first day of school. Teachers will cover their grading policy in their syllabus as well as in their Back to School Night presentation.
  • More information regarding Distance Behavioral Expectations is located below .

WVUSD Distance Learning Behavioral Expectations for Students
