Our mentor sentence this week is from the book, A Bat Cannot Bat, a Stair Cannot Stare. "The steer should steer clear of the fire."
- Watch the read aloud of the mentor text and try to identify different ways the author used homonyms and homophones in this story.
- Label the parts of speech of the mentor sentence and send it to your teacher in the method he or she has chosen.
ELA Lesson 2
GOAL: I can identify the main idea and supporting details of a passage to draw a conclusion based on facts.

- Watch the video below to learn about some of the benefits of therapy dogs in schools.

- Close read (or listen to) the two articles below, "Therapy Dogs Provide Relief for Students," and "New Study Shows..."
- Think about the following questions as you read:
-What are some of the benefits of therapy dogs?
-How can research on dogs be helpful?
-Find a sentence from each text that supports why some students want to see therapy dogs?
-How do students change after their visits with therapy dogs?
-What is the main idea of EACH article?

- After reading both passages, pick one passage to complete the graphic organizer for:
- Fill in the main idea of the passage, three supporting details using evidence from the text, and the conclusion you've drawn (whether therapy dogs are good or bad for schools).
ELA Lesson 3
GOAL: I can appeal to my audience with my writing.
First...LAUNCH:
- Watch the video, "Kids Need Recess." In a previous writing lesson, we were introduced to this speech. As you watch the speaker, think more deeply today on the questions below.
- As you watch, think about these questions:
- How does the speaker hook in his audience?
- What is the speaker's opinion? How do you know that?
- What does he provide in his speech that encourages his audience to agree with him?

MATH LESSON 1
GOAL: I understand and can convert customary units of length.

Watch the “Inches, Feet, and Yards” song to understand the size of these units of length.
Watch the video of Mrs. Ferguson explaining the customary units of length and how to convert them.
Next...EXPLORE:
Practice converting customary units of length on the IXL website. Please stop when the site says "daily practice limit reached." We do not expect you become a member of the website.

- Complete the attached activity and submit it to your teacher by their chosen method (Seesaw, Schoology, Google Classroom, etc.)
Math Lesson 2
Goal: I understand and can convert customary units of weight.
First...LAUNCH:
- Watch the “Ounces, Pounds, and Tons Song-Customary Units of Measurement” video to get an idea of the different types of customary units of weight.
- Watch the video of Mrs. Harrer introducing the customary units of weight and the steps to convert the different measurements.
Next...EXPLORE:
- Watch the Khan Academy video to review how to convert pounds to ounces.
- Practice converting customary units of weight on the IXL website. Remember to continue practicing until you have exceeded the number of questions without a membership.
Last...LANDING:
- Complete the following problems and submit it to your teacher in the method he/she has chosen. Use the conversion table at the bottom of the page for your reference.
Math Lesson 3
GOAL: I can understand and use customary units of liquid volume.
First...LAUNCH:
- "Volume" means the amount of liquid inside a container. "Capacity" means the amount of liquid a container could hold. Both are measured using these units: cups, pints, quarts, and gallons!
- Watch this catchy song to see how cups, pints, quarts, and gallons are related.

1. Watch the video of Mrs. Ferguson explaining how to convert the units of liquid volume.
2. Click the link to practice converting the customary units of liquid volume in Khan Academy.

Here’s a list of materials you will need for this project:
1. Anything you can find inside or outside your house. You might want to watch the videos before you start gathering things!
2. A camera to take a picture of what you create!

Music Lesson

The 45-minute or less presentation will be held Monday, May 18, at 7pm on YouTube Live via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fJg8lFzrZ8&feature=youtu.be. CV Band students have spent time recording performances and instrument demonstrations, and these will be shared during this webcast. Additionally, there will be a Live Q&A session where students and parents watching can ask questions they may have about what it means to be a band kid!
