Carl Cozier News ~ February 4, 2020

Note from the Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome February! Between the end of Winter Break, snow days, holidays and the semester break, it feels like January disappeared. I hope you’re settling into 2020 with ease and the steadier routine is helping everyone in your family adjust as needed.

We’ve been busy at Carl Cozier these days! There have been many field trips – fifth graders to the Planetarium at WWU, fourth graders to the Mt. Baker Theater and second graders enjoyed a couple of trips to the Cozier woods with Wild Whatcom. In music class, students are learning to play the drums and growing their confidence in singing our school song. Spanish class has been filled with lots of new vocabulary and enjoying authentic literature with Senora Savory. P.E. with Coach Lund and Mr. Carlson has been gearing up for the gymnastics unit that begins next week. We’ve had apple tastings, visiting hockey players and such great moments building community in our school.

It is a pleasure to work with your children each day. Thank you for sharing them with all of us. If you have feedback, thoughts, compliments, or if I can support your family in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out.

With gratitude,

Ari Feeney

Valentine's Day at Cozier

At Carl Cozier, we strive to create an inclusive environment for all children. One of the many ways we do this is by ensuring that our classrooms honor all families. Passing out Valentine’s Day cards and celebrating this day with holiday-related activities has the potential to exclude some kids (either based on family culture/values, economic access or simply family preference). As such, instead of bringing cards or gifts this year, I invite families to talk to their children about the various ways we can celebrate love and friendship every day rather than just one specific day. We want children to know that kind words and actions are the most important way to show care. Thank you for honoring this request to not bring valentine’s cards or treats to school. As always, I am happy to connect with questions or feedback.

Promise K Begins!

Carl Cozier Elementary welcomed 12 of our youngest learners last week with the start of our Promise Kindergarten class. Promise K is designed to provide access and opportunity for all children who are scheduled to enter kindergarten in the upcoming fall. The program focuses on academic and social skills and gives children an opportunity to become adjusted to a school environment. Most of the Promise K children are Cozier kids and will continue in our school next year. Welcome Promise K - we are SO excited to have these new friends at school!

Parking Reminders

Pick up and drop off at Cozier can be a little tricky sometimes! Keeping kids safe is always our top priority and one way that we can ensure student safety is by keeping the drop off lane free from parked cars. This allows families to pull close to the curb for a quick student drop off and keeps our bus lanes free for buses or emergency vehicles. I welcome families to walk children into the building in the morning or stand out visiting with other families in the afternoon, but please do not leave your vehicle parked or unattended the drop-off/pick up lane (next to the curb, parallel to the portables). If you would like to park, you’re welcome to park in the lot, at the aquatic center or on the street. Thanks for your help with this.

Family Engagement Coordinator

Please join me in welcoming Yanory Restrepo, our new Family Engagement Coordinator. Yanory’s focus will be supporting families and providing access so that all families are welcomed into our Cozier community. This position is funded with Title I funds and shared between the other Title schools in our district. Yanory is at Cozier on Wednesdays and is eager to support in any way that she can. Please introduce yourself the next time you see her.

Gardening with Common Threads

Classes in all grades are enjoying monthly cooking lessons through March 12th. This month, our student chefs will prepare and taste chickpea curry and a rice pilaf! Keepan eye out for recipes coming home and visit https://commonthreadsfarm.org/recipes/ for more! As spring approaches, our school garden is looking for black plastic and large pieces of brown cardboard. If you can help with this or if you’re interested in getting involved, please contact me: abby@commonthreadsfarm.org

Additionally, students at Regency Park Apartments can further their cooking skills with an after-school supper program starting in February. For more information or to register, contact the leasing office at Regency.
