Spnal Screening for 6th Graders

Spinal Screens for All 6th Grade Students

January 29

State-mandated spinal screens will take place Friday, January 29, for all 6th grade students. Each student is required by the state to participate unless the student is under a doctor’s care. All screenings are completed by SAISD school nurses at no charge.

Any student under a doctor’s care for spinal-related concerns will need a doctor’s note to be exempt from the screening examination. This note should be provided to the nurses on the day of screening.

The screening process requires the nurses to see the bare back at the level of the shoulders and the shoulder blades. They will check the length and curvature of the spine and the alignment of hips. Females should wear/bring a sports bra, tube top, or swimsuit top if they do not wish to be screened in their undergarments. Males will be visualized with bare back only. No tank tops are allowed.

Because spinal screens are state-mandated, the school nurse will notify the parent/guardian of any student who refuses to participate for any reason. Students who decline to participate must be seen by his/her medical provider at the cost of the student’s family.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us with this process.

Please remember that we must have a phone call anytime your student is absent (947-3871 ext. 106) and a note explaining the absence within three days from when they return to school. Remember attendance is checked every period, so if a student misses an entire day or part of a day, it is considered an absence. Also, any student who misses more than 10% of the school year (18 days) is at risk of mandatory summer school or failing for the year.

Feel free to call At-Risk Coordinator, Mrs. Sanchez at 947-3871 ext. 117 or Attendance Clerk, Mrs. Schmidt at 947-3871 ext. 106 with any of your attendance questions.
