FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School :: November 5th, 2014
The FHS is a monthly on-line school newsletter. It will be emailed to you through School Reach. There will be weekly reminders of important events and activities that are planned for the upcoming week.
Dear Parents and Members of the OLQHS Community
Please when driving through carline; remember that school zones are cell phone free zones. The crossing guards as well as duty teachers have noticed that there are quite a few people who are on their cell phones while picking up their children. When the Louisiana legislature voted the cell phone free zones into law, I am sure they were concerned with the safety of the children of Louisiana.
Thank you to all who helped with the Carnival. It was a beautiful and successful day.
I am pleased with our new teachers this year. They are working very hard to adjust to the requirements of OLQHS. Some of our teachers come from very different environments than what we have at Queen of Heaven. The teachers all need to learn our expectations, technology, our curriculum, our schedules, our routines and most of all they need to learn about the students they are teaching. Some of our new teachers come from environments where they never see parents and parents very rarely communicate with them. Sometimes we are not conscientious of these differences and often do not display the understanding or compassion that our teachers need at this time. As a Catholic community, we need to welcome these individuals into our community and show them the support that they need to make these adjustments. All of these changes can be overwhelming and they need us to be patient and considerate.
In the past, administration has dealt with anyone on our staff who has not met the high standards of OLQHS. The students who attend Our Lady Queen of Heaven School are the most important part of our community. Please trust that OLQHS exists because of our students and we will put their needs first.
Ms. JoAnn
The Grading scale is now:
A 100-93 Outstanding
B 92 -85 Very Good
C 84-77 Good
D 76 -70 Weak
E 69 -0 Not fulfilling requirements

Dear Parents/Guardians
I can’t believe that Halloween is upon us! Christmas will be over before we know it!
Students need attention to the uniform/dress regulations.
Let’s begin with the boys’ hair. The uniform code found on page 11 of the Handbook is very clear. The boys’ hair should not touch the eyebrows or the shirt collar. It can be no longer than the middle of the ear lobe. If you are in doubt, have your son shake his head a few times and if that perfectly coiffed and gelled do falls to his eyebrows, he needs a haircut.
With the girls and boys it is NEVER permissible to have color treated or highlighted hair. Contrary to popular belief, Jell-O does NOT wash out!!!
Socks have been a big issue with some of the boys. They must be plain white, black, or navy blue—NO LOGOS. A few boys are trying to sneak by with neon-colored socks that are clearly not part of the uniform.
A few of the girls need attention to their skirt length. Have your daughter kneel down and measure from the floor to the bottom of the skirt. The skirt should be no more than 4 inches from the floor.
I will be in Washington with the 8th grade this week. When I return, students not conforming to the dress code will have cards marked daily until they are in compliance.
Thank you for attending to this!

Instant Wisdom :: Composing and Decomposing Numbers
What does it mean to compose and decompose numbers?
Numbers are made up of digits in the same way that words are made up of letters. Composing and decomposing numbers means making numbers using different combinations. For example, 8 can be decomposed into 7 and 1, 6 and 2, 5 and 3... It is important for students to understand how these combinations work for them to be able to understand addition and subtraction. Basically, composing and decomposing is an introduction to place value and helping students see that a "10" is really made up of a group of ones.
“One of the reasons I love teaching math is that it is so much different now than when I was in elementary school. Take composing and decomposing numbers. I don't remember ever "playing" with numbers. I learned to count, I learned to write my numbers, I learned addition and subtraction facts, but I don't remember ever learning that there are lots of ways to make 5, or any number for that matter.”
504 Plans vs. IEPs
504 Plans vs. IEPs
A 504 plan is different from an individualized education program (IEP) (Service Plan). The main difference is that a 504 plan modifies a student's regular education program in a regular classroom setting. A 504 plan is monitored by classroom teachers. A student with an IEP, as part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004), usually receives different educational services in a special educational setting. IEP programs are delivered and monitored by additional school support staff.
Also, parental approval and involvement is required for an IEP, but not for a 504 plan. Full parental participation in the 504 plan process, however, is important for the student's academic success.
It's important to note that students with IEPs are also entitled to the additional protections and services offered by 504 plans. Students with IEPs might benefit from a 504 plan, for example, if they're moving from a special education setting to a regular classroom.
Reviewing the 504 Plan
Once the plan is developed by the team, all the student's teachers are responsible for implementing the accommodations in the plan, as well as participating in plan reviews.
The 504 plan should be reviewed at least annually to determine if the accommodations are up to date and appropriate, based on the student's needs. Any 504 plan team member, including the parent, may call for a 504 plan review at any time if there is an educational concern or change in the student's needs.
The plan can be terminated if the 504 team determines that the student:
* is no longer disabled
* no longer requires any special accommodations or services to meet the identified needs
* can be appropriately instructed in general education
Caught You Being Good this week at OLQHS!! Let’s Celebrate!
- I want to congratulate our football team for their sportsmanship and great example to others especially to the following students who offered their congratulations to the ICCS Team: Patrick Laborde, Benji Chatters, Will Gage, JT Peloquin, Jace Peloquin, Thomas Lundy and to any other students who did the same. You warmed my heart and showed me what wonderful children you are. Winning is not everything!!
- Following the last chess club meeting, two members noticed the boards had not been returned neatly. Without being asked to rearrange the boards, Noah Speights and Josh Gillett straightened up the boards and helped me put the equipment away. Thanks guys.
- Audrey Bergstedt, an 8th grade student at OLQHS, was chosen as the 2014 Cal-Cam Fair Miss Teen. She was chosen out of 29 other girls. Audrey will represent Our Lady Queen of Heaven School at various events throughout this year. Congratulations, Audrey. You will be an outstanding representative of OLQHS.
Congratulations!!!
Excellent Attendance
Being in school everyday means your child won’t miss out on learning. Try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours. If he asks to stay home “just because,” remind him/her of what he’ll miss, such as his reading group or art class. Explain that he can be absent if he’s sick or if there’s a family emergency.
OLQHS Annual "Run for Others"

The Art World
Well the Art World is going strong!! So many things to create and learn!
We have quite a few new members of the Artsonia Hall of Fame. They are: Kindergarteners Greyson Snow, Reece Campbell, Bailee Gabbard, and Campbell Louviere; First Graders Cara Henry and Branson Savoy; Second Graders Hannah Boullion and Maggie Nickel; Third Graders Maya Sanders, Ellie Nickel, Makilyn Celestine, and Carter Kramer; Fourth Grader Eli Garry; Fifth Graders Riley Hebert and Jake Smith. Congratulations to all!!!
The 7th Graders finished their Angels of Peace for the Contest to select the cover of Advent Card for Our Lady Queen of Heaven. The entries are magnificent! They worked so hard on this project and I was so very proud of each and every one of them. If you are looking for a beautiful Christmas/Advent Card, consider using one of our own “angels” artwork through Artsonia. Any picture can be put on a folded Christmas card and your family name printed on the inside. The Art Department would receive 20% of each sale. Think about it, what the world needs now is “Peace”.
The 8th Graders are finishing their Santa Gourds and they are beautiful. Check Artsonia and comment on one of their pictures. The 6th Graders will be making an Aborigine Birdhouse. We have been studying the Aborigines of Australia and their Artwork to help them create their own original Aborigine design.
Please come by the Fine Arts Building to view the beautiful Angels of Peace, the horribly scary and hideous Monsters of the Fifth Graders, the Fall Trees of the Second Graders, and the Pete the Cat pictures of Third and Fourth Grade.
Remember, you children’s artwork on cups, luggage tags, jewelry, bookmarkers and other things make WONDERFUL stocking stuffers. Sometime in January or February we will have an Artsonia T-Shirt Day so get your t-shirts ready for that day.
We are busy in Art having fun, creating, and making messes!

IMPORTANT ART ANNOUNCEMENT
The Art Department and the Administration are proud to announce the winners of the “Angel of Peace” Art Contest. The 1st place winner of the contest will have her picture on the cover of the Our Lady Queen of Heaven Advent Card. All winners will receive ribbons.
The assignment was this: Draw me a picture for an Advent Card that includes an angel and a symbol of Peace (a dove with olive branch, PAX, or Chi Rho). Those were my only instructions. I let each artist choose their own medium. Some chose Prismacolor Pencil Colors, some chose Cray Pas (oil pastels), and some chose to combine them both. Two students chose to use acrylic paint on canvas. The results were outstandingly beautiful. I am so very proud of all twenty nine 7th Graders that participated in this contest. Their work was exceptional!

Chess Club Update
At the latest meeting we had 50 students, grades 2 through 8, attending. With this large number of members we obviously needed some adult help. Fortunately, Dr. Michael Buckles and Dr. Todd Furman, both members of the McNeese faculty, have generously offered to help out. I want to take this opportunity to thank them for their time and effort. Also, with this large number of students participating, the kids need to behave appropriately, and so far they have been doing a good job. We meet every Wednesday in the OLQHS library from 3:30 – 4:30 unless otherwise notified.
Coat Drive
The Kiwanis Club is holding an annual Coat Drive. There are boxes in the main and middle school office. Please send any used and out grown coats so we may give to the less fortunate.

OLQH Advanc-ed/SACS Evaluation set for Spring 2015
It has already been five years since the Advanc-ed Quality Assurance Team evaluated our school. They will be returning in March of 2015 to evaluate OLQH once again.
The evaluation procedure has changed quite a bit since they last came, but the process by which we look at our school remains much the same. We will perform a self study based on the following standards:
Standard 1—Vision and Purpose—team leader—Mrs. JoAnn Wallwork
Standard 2—Governance and Leadership—team leader---Kelly Babineaux
Standard 3—Teaching and Learning—team leaders—Adrienne Zembower and Tina Fink
Standard 4—Resources and Support Systems---team leader—Jane Piraro
Standard 5—Using Results for Continuous Improvement—team leader—Chris Crosby
Throughout the year we will be asking parents, students, teachers, grandparents and community member to provide us with feedback. This may be in the form of a survey, stakeholder meeting, interviews…etc… Please be open to accepting these invitations. Our team will guide you through this process.
Your input is vital in assuring that Our Lady Queen of Heaven school continues to move forward and provide the best education possible for the children entrusted to us.
PLEASE HELP US BY PARTICIPATING IN THE SURVEYS YOU ARE REQUEST TO COMPLETE. THIS WILL HELP TO GET AN ACCURATE PICTURE OF OLQHS.
Thank you,
Kelly Babineaux
