HERSHEY NOTES
MARCH 2, 2018
FROM THE DESK OF MRS. FIELDS
Happy birthday to Dr. Seuss! It is hard to believe that this iconic author would be 114 today! Our students and teachers had fun dressing up as one of his book’s characters, Be sure to check out pictures on our Hershey Website, Facebook and Twitter accounts.
TESTING UPDATES
ISTEP
The majority of our third through fifth grade students have finished the first round of ISTEP testing! The flu bug is still flying through our building, so we have quite a few make-up tests to administer- but we will be certain to have everyone caught up as soon as possible.
ISTEP Part 2 will be administered April 30- May 11. Thank you so much for your part in getting our students to school on time and ready to test! A big shout out goes to the Hershey PTO for providing student snacks for the week!
IREAD3
All third grade students will be taking the IREAD state assessment on Monday, March 12. This is a very important test as it is the state’s way of determining if a student has the necessary skills to move on to the next grade. All classes will be testing in the morning. Unfortunately, we need to move our clocks up one hour Sunday morning. What horrible timing! We appreciate all that you can do to have your child well rested, fed, and ready for the test on this day.
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES
The end of the third quarter is Friday, March 9! Parent/Teacher conferences will be held the week of March 12. We are looking forward to having this special time with you to discuss the progress of you child!
MISS RIORDAN'S NOTES
With the help of several grade levels of Ambassador’s Club, we have started an appreciation station for students to show appreciation for a staff member or another student. The students not only get to show appreciation for others, but also learn how to correctly fill out an envelope! Each day, students from different third grade classes take turns distributing the letters and supervising the appreciation station. They have been great at teaching younger students how to fill out envelopes as well as delivering them.
March is Disability Awareness Month and we are participating in a fundraiser to raise money for World Down Syndrome Day on 3/21. I have been collecting baby pictures of Hershey staff and next week, will put all of them on a poster. Starting Friday, students can pay $1 for 4 guesses to try and match the picture to the staff member! On 3/23 we will reveal who is who on the poster!
Additionally, students can decorate their own poster at the appreciation station supporting Disability Awareness Month. This year’s campaign theme is “Be cool. We are”. Students can draw and/or write what makes them unique on their poster and hang it where they choose throughout the school.
Happy Almost Spring! :)

MARCH - HABIT OF THE MONTH
SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND THEN BE UNDERSTOOD
While I love all of the habits, this is my most favorite because it helps students understand empathy. We are trying to teach our kiddos to consider how others will feel by the choices they make. We are working on solving problems calmly- listening first to others then explaining our feelings in a kind way. We hope that by promoting this habit, we will further our mission for creating a culture of kindness at Hershey.
