****************************** Senior Spotlight - Congratulations Yanisa on your upcoming graduation!
I am Yanisa Junkham, a senior at Springfield High School. I lived in Thailand all my life before coming to the U.S. and started school here as a sophomore. It was so hard for me to learn a new language I barely knew. I tried so hard to learn English. There were a lot of obstacles that I’ve been through such as learning the new culture and adjusting to the society here.
I have wanted to be a doctor since I was a kid. I did my best to study because I want to be successful in my life. It was so hard sometimes. I absolutely know how people feel when you are a senior and have to think about what you want to achieve in the future, which is so stressful. I applied to the university that I wanted. I was disappointed at first when things didn’t go the way I planned. I want to thank all my family and people around me who pushed me to try again. It made me feel a lot better. Honestly, I still was afraid to apply to another college. But I tried and was admitted to the Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville. I remember the day when I heard the good news. I was really happy. Especially, that I know my family and people around me are proud of me. I learned a lesson that sometimes things can be bad but if you don’t try, you will not know what may happen: do the best you can. Frankly, I am so proud of myself. I remember myself as a girl who barely knew English and now I will be a college student! It wasn’t easy and it required a lot of time studying but I know that I am one step closer towards achieving my dream of becoming a doctor. I know there are still a lot of things I have to learn and spend a lot of years studying but I am ready for this challenge.

**********************************************How can parents help their children learn English?
Research shows that children who are literate in their first language perform much better in school than children who are not literate in their first language. Parents should continue to interact with their children in their first language and to encourage them to become bilingual.
● Talk with your child about school in your language.
● Read to your child in your language.
● Ask your child to read to you in English and expect your child to read every day.
● Tell your child stories in your language.
● Encourage your child to complete homework assignments.
● Encourage your child to read and write in your language.
