Taking action on hunger

Step up to the plate and knock out hunger!

About the Rescue Mission

The Grant County Rescue Mission was founded in 1985, and they just recently celebrated their 30th anniversary. The mission is not federally funded, instead they rely on donations from all over Grant County. There are four stores that the mission owns that also helps fund the program. They currently have three homeless shelter locations including a men’s shelter, a women’s shelter, and a home for one family. They are renovating a building to house three more families as well. The goal of the Mission is not only to feed the hungry but to get those that need help back on their feet. They serve over 70,000 meals a year and house hundreds throughout the year. The Rescue Mission hopes to expand in the coming years so they can help even more people in need.

Our Mission

We started discussing hunger awareness in JAG and came to the conclusion we wanted to do our service project at our local Rescue Mission. We called them and set a date for November 17th to come and serve dinner to those in need. It went very well but one problem we had was there were so many of us that we ran out of jobs to do! After we finished, they invited us to come back to help serve their big Thanksgiving meal. On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we served over 200 people and realized the impact we were making in our community. We learned that we should not judge those that come to the Mission because it could be us in their shoes one day. Later on we received a "Feed the Need" barrel to help collect food donations for the Mission. It is a big barrel and we hope to fill it up with food. What we did made a difference in the lives of those at the shelter that day, but we know we could always do more. That is something we intend to do the rest of the school year!
