Thiaw, Baby!

June 2013

Welcome to Thiaw, Baby!, a newsletter about my little corner of the poetry scene. It is my intent to keep you informed about my current book tour and upcoming poetry events in Central PA and beyond. Thiaw, Baby! will be sent out to my personal mailing list once per month. If you wish to be removed from this list, feel free to email me at and unsubscribe. Otherwise, thank you for reading and sharing Thiaw, Baby! with other literary enthusiasts.

What's In A Name?

Many of you are receiving this newsletter because you previously attended a book launch or reading for Rising Waters or Windows to the Soul, or you purchased a CD by Maria C. James. My new pen name, Maria James-Thiaw, reflects the poet you knew and the new me -- a wife and a mom. This poem is a fun attempt to help Americans with the translation: THIAW: What's in A Name?

Easy to say,

hard to read,

an African-born name

whispered by Senagalese waves

like Thies, not a game

but a town,

Even Akon's a Thiam,

not a tam or a thumb

Thiaw, not a thaw but

a Ciao;

Turn the T to a C then

open wide

let it end on the tip of pursed lips,

a french kiss.

Say Thiaw, Bella,

Thiaw Baby!

Thiaw Down.

Got it now?

I am Maria James-Thiaw
