4-H Archery Club Work Days
Excerpt from the 2019 4-H Archery Club Guidelines:
4-H Archery Club Work Day:
- 10 yd youth (8-11 yrs old) will be required to participate in one of the work days and provide TWO HOURS of work.
- 20 yd youth (12-18 yrs old) will be required to participate in one of the work days and contribute FOUR HOURS of work.
- The work days will be to help support Orion Archery and is in exchange for being able to use their facilities.
- When registering for the 4-H Archery Club, each member was asked for a $50 deposit check. This check will be returned when the 4-H member completes their work day requirement. If the archer, or someone in their place, doesn’t show up to work, Orion will cash the check.

- Orion is currently short cardboard and are still waiting to hear if we’ll have it. If we cannot get it, we will most likely reschedule this day.
- Waxing bows
- Repairing arrows
- Target butt rebuilds

- Setup for Tomcak shoot
- June 2nd
- Help during the Tomcak shoot
- Help with tear down and cleanup after the Tomcak shoot

FYI – note from the Coordinator – a Dodge County 4-H Leader who is organizing the event …
It is open to anyone that is involved in a shooting sports program. There are no geographical boundaries. No training requirements, if someone is a novice shooter it is recommended a coach or parent assist.
ALSO – Aaron VonBehrn, Washington County 4-H BB Gun Certified Leader has communicated that if any 4-H members need equipment that they can contact him via email (avb@reagan.com) to make arrangements.
Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshops
Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Add-One Workshop in Hunting Skills in Pleasanton

A Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Add-One Workshop is scheduled for March in Pleasanton. It will be held Saturday, March 23rd at the Community Building in Pleasanton. The deadline for early registration for this special session is March 13.
Volunteers have the opportunity to become certified as an adult (21 years and older) or apprentice (14-20 years old) leader. This special workshop will focus only on the Hunting Skills project area. Certification in this project area is only available to individuals who have been certified as a 4-H Shooting Sports instructor after January 1, 2014.
There is a minimum number of participants needed to offer this workshop. Workshop participants will learn under expert instruction from members of the Nebraska State 4-H Shooting Sports Training Team.
The early bird registration fee is $75 per person for this one-day workshop. This fee includes Saturday lunch, supplies and program materials. The registration fee after March 13th is $125. Participants must make their own lodging arrangements, if needed. Registration on Saturday runs from 8:30 a.m. – 9 a.m.

Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop in Central City

A Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop is scheduled for early April in Central City. It will be held April 6-7 at the Merrick County Fairgrounds in Central City. The deadline to register for the Central City training is March 27.
Volunteers have the opportunity to become certified as an adult (21 years and older) or apprentice (14-20 years old) leader. Six project areas will be offered at the Workshop - rifle, shotgun, muzzleloading, coordinator, hunting skills, and archery. The Coordinator certification being offered in Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports is for individuals who work with certified shooting sports leaders, 4-H club leaders for shooting sports projects, or 4-H volunteers managing shooting sports events/competitions.
Coordinators will explore and learn more about the different disciplines in 4-H Shooting Sports, how to support the different types of coaches, structuring a budget, designing a fund-raising plan, building an overall plan focused on Positive Youth Development, practice handling conflict, discover how to manage and recruit volunteers, best practices for managing events and competitions, teaching more than just “shooting” with science and healthy lifestyles, and working within your county’s 4-H structure.
There is a minimum number of participants needed to offer these disciplines at the workshop. Workshop participants will learn under expert instruction from members of the Nebraska State 4-H Shooting Sports Training Team.
The registration fee is $110.00 per person for initial certification and those individuals adding an additional discipline except for Coordinator and Apprentice Instructors. The registration fee for Coordinator and Apprentice Instructors is $90 for this workshop. This fee includes meals, supplies and program materials. The registration fee after March 27th is $160. Participants must make their own lodging arrangements. Registration on Saturday runs from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

SUPPORT PROVIDED for CERTIFICATION
The Washington County 4-H Council provides support to Washington County 4-H volunteers interested in getting certified in the state 4-H shooting sports program. The 4-H Council will cover the cost of registration and will provide some travel funds to individuals who attend the Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop and who will be donating their time and talents to support our county 4-H shooting sports program.

4-H Companion Animal Challenge

4-H Companion Animal Challenge:
The Companion Animal Challenge is a set of contests for youth interested in companion animals. These contests are animal-less and test youths knowledge about companion animals. New this year to the contest are a Cat Skillathon and an essay contest. 4-H youth ages 10-18 are invited to participate.
- The 4-H Companion Animal Challenge will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Animal Science Complex.
- Contests include: Demonstration Contest, Dog Skillathon Contest, Cat Skillathon Contest, Essay Contest, Art Contest, and Photography Contest.
- This event allows youth to apply their companion animal knowledge, but does not require them to have an animal!
- It will be held the same day as the 4-H Horse Stampede so that youth can compete in both events if they choose. We will ensure there are not schedule conflicts.

4-H Horse Day Camp
8th Annual Innovative Youth Corn Challenge
Do you enjoy being outside? Learning new things about crops? Considering a career involving crops, insects, diseases, soils, water or more? Do you want to help figure out how to feed our world’s growing population in a sustainable way?
Nebraska Extension and the Nebraska Corn Board are offering the 8th Innovative Youth Corn Challenge contest. This contest, open to 4-H members (age 10 & older as of Jan. 1st) or FFA members (in-school members), guides participants through all aspects of corn production, as well as agricultural careers related to corn production.
As a team (2 or more participants), youth will be challenged to implement a production practice different than normal to determine if they increased their yield. Economics and sustainability of the practice will also be considered. Yields, cropping history, and production information will be collected in the Corn Yield Challenge management summary.
Cash prizes and plaques are given. First place receives $1,000, second place receives $500, and third place receives $250. Sustainability, crop scouting and “extra mile” awards are also given as cash awards.
To participate in 2019, youth must complete and return an entry form by March 15th to the Fillmore County Extension Office in Geneva, NE. Forms can be downloaded after January 1st at cropwatch.unl.edu/youth/activities. For more information, contact Brandy VanDeWalle at brandy.vandewalle@unl.edu.
Washington County 4-H Camp Scholarship
The Washington County 4-H Council sponsors 4-H Camp scholarships for 4-H'ers interested in attending a Nebraska 4-H Summer Camp. Scholarship amounts are as follows: $20 for Clover Kid recipients, $50 for recipients who did not complete a 2018 Career Portfolio, and $100 for recipients completed a 2018 Career Portfolio. An in-depth clinic targeted for FFA and 4-H youth interested in Poultry Judging. Topics will include laying hen past production evaluation, egg grading and candling, carcass grading, and product identification; fun Quiz Bowl activity at lunch break; Mock contest after lunch.
Must be 8 years of age as of January 1, 2019 to participate.
Clinic Cost is $10 payable to UNL Animal Science – Poultry.

Adventure Day at 4-H Camp
· Saturday June 15, 2019 10AM – 4PM
· Youth ages 6-12 years old are eligible to attend! $35 per person. 1 adult meal is included per child registration. Adults chaperones are encouraged to attend, but are not required.
· Introduce your camper to just how fun 4-H Camp can be! This camp lets you indulge in your adventurous side! Wildlife experts join us with a live animal demonstration where we will get up close and personal with some cool wild animals. Then we will head to Schramm Park where you will get a choice between exploring the NEW Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium’s interactive exhibits or try your hand at canoeing and fishing on the ponds.
· Make sure you pack your swimsuit because in the afternoon you will be making a splash during our water party and taking trips down our GIANT Waterside!
