Room 603 Update
A Class of Leaders // November 9, 2015
Last Week Review
Multiplication
We have spent the last couple of weeks really diving into multiplication and discovering different ways to represent equal groups. This unit is less about memorizing facts, and more about building conceptual knowledge and context for multiplication. Students have been doing great!
Lexia
Lexia is an amazing program that targets the language skills that each kid needs and guides them in the practice of those skills. When it is used with fidelity (meeting usage minutes, consistently practicing) students can grow 2-3 grade levels in reading within a year. Pictured are some of our students who have passed a level this week.
Some notes for Lexia at home:
- Independent - students need to be working completely by themselves on the program. When a student reaches a frustration point, the program recognizes that and will guide them in mastering that skill.
- Focused - If your child is choosing to do Lexia at home, they should be in a spot where they can focus for the time they're on. If they leave or take too long because they are distracted, the program will register that.
Synergize!
We have been working on Leader in Me Trait 6 - Synergize: Together is Better. They put their teamwork to the test by building cup towers without touching the cups! That excited group of ladies below won the contest, but every group was successful and practiced some excellent communication skills.
Announcements
Parent Conferences
Parent conferences are next week! Some new things this year:
- Goals - This will be a goal setting conference, as opposed to going over a report card. Parents, if you haven't already please write out a goal you have for your child in this link.
- Students come! - I'm asking that students come with you so we can talk about goals together
I will be sending home a reminder for your time on Thursday. I'm excited to meet with you all!
Garden
Next week is Garden Week! Students will have a chance to work in the garden and learn some real-life skills.
If you're interested in helping out, I'm sure we could use more volunteers! Contact Alison Frost @ alisonafrost@gmail.com if you'd like to volunteer.
