Sheldon Update
November 14, 2022
Welcome from Mrs. Tanner
Dear Sheldon Families,
A few reminders as the weather begins to get colder:
- Please send two pairs of weather appropriate clothing to have on hand at school in case of accidents or big messes. If the clothes you currently have here are for warmer weather, please send new sets.
- Students who are bus riders need to have their harness on UNDER their coat.
- Please be at the bus stop at least 10 minutes early.
- Students can not be picked up or dropped off at any location other than the assigned bus stop. Please DO NOT attempt to "chase down" the bus.
Families of OT students, the car line is a RIGHT TURN ONLY out of our parking lot. DO NOT BLOCK intersections or driveways!

As always, if you have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to me!
Thank you for the privilege of serving you ~

When I send messages to all families, such as this weekly newsletter, delayed buses, event reminders, etc., I send those via email and text. If you have not been receiving them via text, it could be that you have not yet opted in to that service. If you would like to begin receiving messages this way, text "YES" to 86088.

Policy Council Updates
November 9, 2022 Meeting
1. Don't forget to download the Kaymbu app and send a "moment" from home to your child's teacher!
2. Sheldon's Leadership Team has established the following building goals in Literacy and Math for the 2022-2023 school year. Current progress toward these goals is in BOLD.
- Goal 1: By May 2023, 35% of Sheldon 4 year old students will score in the Tier I category on Number Naming as evidenced by the myIGDIs assessment.
- 2022 Fall myIGDIs scores show that currently 17% of our 4 year-old students scored in the tier 1 category in number naming
- 132 total students assessed: 23 scored tier I
- Goal 2: By May 2023, 70% of Sheldon 4 year old students will score in the cut or Tier 1 categories on letter sound identification as evidenced by the myIGDIs assessment.
- 2022 Fall myIGDIs scores show that currently 59% of our 4 year-old students scored in the cut or Tier 1 categories for letter sound identification.
- 125 total students assessed: 28 scored tier I, 46 scored in the cut category (3 assessed using Spanish literacy assessment)
- Starting in preschool and Kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days per month over the course of the school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences and tardiness can effect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school - and themselves!

Policy & Procedure Review
Supporting Social and Emotional Development
Each week the Sheldon staff reviews one of our Head Start Policies & Procedures and felt it was important that families stay up to date on these as well. This quarter our focus is on Mental Health, Disability, and Child Development and Education. If you ever have any questions regarding our policies and procedures, please reach out!
Supporting Social and Emotional Development
POLICY:
While promoting school readiness, staff will support each child’s social and emotional development through design of the physical environment and a schedule of activities. By doing this, they are building trust, encouraging self-control and respect for the feelings and rights of others, fostering development and supporting each child’s home language, culture and family composition. This policy relates to Head Start Performance Standards 45 CFR Part 1302.31
PROCEDURE:
1. Set clear and consistent limits, develop rules, post visual cues, and enforce them consistently. Review and update rules throughout the year.
2. Have realistic, appropriate expectations of children based on knowledge of early childhood development and each child’s strengths and needs.
3. Include anti-bias curriculum goals in lesson planning. Provide opportunities for children to build trust; feel good about him/herself; appreciate and interact comfortably with others who are different from themselves; develop skills to recognize and deal with hurtful attitudes and behavior directed toward themselves and others.
4. Provide many opportunities for children to initiate activities and make choices.
5. Use goals from Second Step and Conscious Discipline to address self-control and respect feelings and rights of others (understanding self and others, impulse control and anger management). Document in lesson plans Supporting Social and Emotional Development
6. Help children to make friends.
7. Create space and time for children to interact and work together, such as games, build with blocks, dramatic play, puppet show, etc. to promote team-building concepts and activities. Provide encouragement and suggestions to enable children to solve problems on their own, complete challenging tasks, and learn from their mistakes.
