Thoughts from Dr. Pacatte
Norovirus. The Norovirus has been around for a while now and the Lake County Health Department has indicated that there are increasing numbers. This virus presents with flu-like symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. It can run anywhere from 1 to 10+ days and is highly contagious. The guidance for schools is to treat as we do all illnesses with one major exception. Should a student throw up in school/class there are specific cleaning protocols that require the students to be removed from the room. The virus is airborne so they don’t want it cleaned up while others are in the room. Once cleaned the room is safe to return to.
The Norovirus is not killed with alcohol based hand sanitizers. Soap and water washing of hands is needed. Please encourage your kids to do this.
I want to wish everyone a very safe and peaceful vacation next week. If you are traveling, please consider running an at home test prior to sending your child(ren) to school. We had 70+ positive cases after Winter Break; and while many will be in warm places and outdoors, it is likely you will be with larger groups of people.

Big Ball Blast and Ga Ga Ball at Spaulding School
Spaulding School students enjoyed playing Big Ball Blast and Ga Ga Ball this week. In Big Ball Blast, opposing teams throw soft balls at a large ball to get it to roll to the opposing team's end of the gym. In Ga Ga Ball, players slap a ball on the ground, attempting to hit other players in the legs to eliminate them from the game. Both games are high-intensity cardiovascular workouts that involve a lot of throwing, striking, and movement. Many students voiced their opinion that these are some of their favorite activities in physical education class.
Everyday Heros Award
District 56 is very proud of our student, Emma Owiny. She was presented with the Everyday Heroes Award at the Village Board Meeting on Monday evening. Emma made a life-saving call to 911, showing amazing strength and bravery during a stressful situation.
Great work, and congratulations, Emma!
Here is Emma's story:
On February 23, 2022, Emma returned home from Viking Middle School and found her 89-year-old grandmother lying on the floor and in need of medical attention. Emma dialed 911, remained calm, and communicated important information to the dispatcher, allowing for an appropriate medical response. Emma's heroic actions on this date ensured that her grandmother received immediate medical care during an emergency.
