Year 5 Newsletter

Welcome to the Year 5 newsletter!
Dear Parents,
Welcome to Term 3! It is hard to believe we are here already!
We hope you all had a nice Easter break? The children seem to have come back full of enthusiasm and ready for their final term in Year 5! It has been a busy first week back with a new unit of inquiry; 5B's class assembly and all of Year 5 showcasing their talents in the Chinese Assembly.
You will have recently received a couple of emails from Mr Dray letting you know that our enterprise unit, How We Organise Ourselves, is now underway. If you are able to help and willing to share your expertise, please let your child's class teacher know. Also a reminder that each student needs to bring in $50 to invest in the start up costs for their business. Please make sure that they earn it somehow to enhance their sense of ownership in the business. More details about the unit are below.
We look forward to a productive and exciting final term. As always, thank you for your continued support.

Unit of Inquiry
How We Organise Ourselves.
Central Idea: Economic activity relies on systems of production, exchange and
consumption of goods and services.
Lines of Inquiry:
● The role of supply and demand (function, supply and demand)
● The distribution of goods and services (connection, interdependence)
● How economic activity affects our lives (connection, needs and want)
In this unit, the students will be learning the key concepts by developing a product and taking it from idea, right through the various stages to selling it at the Year 5 Market Day on May 17th. They will be using the skills they have developed over the last unit to advertise their product and persuade students at Kennedy school to buy it. They will be allocating different roles within their groups, making decisions collectively, budgeting and working to deadlines. The process will be as realistic as possible and already the children are getting very excited!
Maths
We will be continuing our units in Mathematics on Fractions, Decimals, Percentage & Ratio and Space for one more week. The I can statements are:
Understand the relationship and convert between common fractions and decimal fractions
Simplify fractions to the lowest common denominator
Model, read, write and compare improper fractions and mixed numbers
Model, read, write and compare percentages understanding them as the number of parts in every 100
Model and solve simple problems involving ratio and proportion
- Model and solve simple problems involving fractions
The next unit will be Pattern and Function. The unit conceptual understandings are:
· Functions are relationships or rules that uniquely associate members of one set with members of another set.
· By analysing patterns and identifying rules for patterns it is possible to make predictions.
· Patterns can often be generalised using algebraic expressions, equations or functions.
· Exponential notation is a powerful way to express repeated products of the same number.
The 'I Can' statements for the children are:
· Investigate and represent patterns using words, symbols, numbers, tables and graphs.
· Identify rules for patterns to predict future terms.
· Identify and describe factors and multiples of whole numbers.
· Solve equivalent number sentences involving multiplication and division to find unknown quantities.
A reminder that children can support their learning in the classroom by completing the Mathletics activities online. Well done to all the children who have already collected awards for their participation so far!
Green Week
The week before the Easter holidays was Green Week here at Kennedy. Well done to all the children who took part in the Green initiative competitions and dressed up on the Thursday for our Trashion Fashion show. There were some fantastic creations and it was clear that people had put a lot of thought and effort into them.
